We are expanding and have an excellent opportunity to join our Power Delivery team as a Substation Engineering Manager for the West region! This role is key to driving the development and execution of substation projects within our growing Power Delivery group, including business development, proposal creation, process optimization, team building, and technical project management. The position requires a regular presence in our regional offices and some domestic travel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain broad expertise in utility power distribution, transmission, and substation systems, with a specific focus on substation design and standards.
  • Oversee substation and switching station design, including:
  • Physical Design: Engineering of equipment, structures, ductbanks, grounding, lighting, static protection, and relay houses.
  • Protection & Control (P&C) Design: Engineering of protection systems, one-line and three-line diagrams, wiring and connection diagrams, relay schemes, and communication systems.
  • Equipment Replacement: Design for equipment replacement programs.
  • New Builds: Design for greenfield projects.
  • Develop design alternatives, conduct engineering calculations and analyses, and prepare cost estimates for significant substation capital upgrades.
  • Perform site surveys for major upgrade projects, develop conceptual designs, and present these to management and clients.
  • Create comprehensive cost estimates for large-scale substation projects and keep updated on industry standards and codes, ensuring all projects meet regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain expertise in power system protection and relaying schemes for substations.
  • Review complex electrical system models, validate study results, and develop specifications for major electrical apparatus.
  • Schedule and participate in field walk-downs with customers, subcontractors, and construction teams, performing field take-offs for estimates and ensuring consistency across project documents.
  • Coordinate and review the work of up to 5 engineers and designers, ensuring project quality and adherence to timelines.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program or equivalent, with 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Substation project experience, including EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction).
  • 3+ years in engineering management, with a preference for experience in building a team from the ground up.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • Strong communication skills; prior experience in business development is advantageous.
