What does a great Senior Mainframe Hardware Engineer do?
We are seeking a Senior Mainframe Hardware Engineer. Our Hardware Engineers enhance and maintain the stability of the mainframe complexes by providing high-quality technical expertise and guidance for our platforms, operating systems, and databases. As a Senior Mainframe Hardware Engineer, you will work with other Hardware Engineers, Systems Engineers, and Support teams performing daily activities ranging in complexity. You will be responsible for the design, configuration, testing, maintenance, and reliable operation of our mainframe infrastructure. You will own and drive work efforts through all stages of the requirements, design, development, quality, and implementation life cycles. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated, talented, technical, proactive person who embraces team culture, challenges, and problem-solving and has a proven track record of delivering.
Responsibilities:
- Provide functional expertise and technical leadership for the management of the mainframe hardware configuration (CPU, DASD, VTS, HMC and FICON Directors), inclusive of hardware planning lifecycles, vendor engagement for upgrades, and production support of repair actions
- Architect, design, implement, administer, and support mainframe infrastructure compute, storage, storage fabric, resiliency, and disaster recovery solutions
- Ability to design and administer mainframe infrastructure management and security capabilities
- Responsible for the ongoing support for all mainframe hardware, including monitoring, troubleshooting, problem resolution, and maintenance including escalation to vendors for service restoration and problem resolution
- Enhance and maintain the stability of the mainframe complexes (zTPF, zOS, zVM, zLinux) by providing high quality technical expertise, keeping up to date with vendor recommendations for microcode levels and guidance for all mainframe hardware
- Manage and support tools for management, capacity planning, and performance
- Provide operational and production support for Travelport systems, including third level support and problem resolution for production, pre-production, and lower-level testing environments
- Serve as subject matter expert and provide direction to others. Lead small projects and be the key technical expert for larger projects
- Understand integration and impact on adjacent systems, as well as short and long-term impact of technical decisions
- Provide 24x7 on-call availability and support on a rotating basis with other team members
Who we are looking for in this role:
- Proven and current experience with architecture, integration, security, compliance of mainframe hardware technologies and associated infrastructure
- Knowledge of zSeries Central Electronics Complexes (CEC), Direct Access Storage Device storage (DASD), Virtual Tape Server storage (VTS), Hardware Maintenance Consoles (HMC), FICON Directors and other peripheral hardware
- Advanced knowledge in IOCP / IOCDS / IODF
- Knowledge of storage vendor’s replication services - IBM’s Peer to Pier Remote Copy / Flashcopy, Dell-EMC’s SRDF / Timefinder, and Hitachi Vantara’s TrueCopy / ShadowImage
- Ability to navigate mainframe systems such as zOS, zLinux, zVM, and zTPF
- Programming capabilities are a plus (REXX, OOREXX)
- Demonstrated strong technical aptitude with strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills
- Knowledge of ITIL principles and processes
- Self-motivated with ability to multi-task and embrace an ever-changing environment, competing priorities, and high expectations
- Dedication to learning new skills and strengthening existing skills
- Commitment to providing mentorship, formal training sessions, and on the job training to teammates
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills with ability to communicate technical information in a clear and succinct manner

Salary Target/Range: $135,000 - $150,000
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
