Data center engineering is the process of designing, building, and maintaining data centers, which are facilities used to house and manage critical IT infrastructure, applications, and data. Data center engineers ensure the data center infrastructure's stability, reliability, and security. They are crucial in supporting the availability and performance of applications and services. This involves the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical infrastructure of a data center, including electrical and mechanical systems.

The Senior Manager of Data Center Design and Construction will lead a team of engineers to design, build, and fit-out world-class data centers. This role involves managing the entire project lifecycle from initiation to turnover and closeout, ensuring that projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in data center design, construction, and operations, with a strong focus on project management and customer satisfaction.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and construction of data center projects, ensuring alignment with business objectives and customer requirements.
  • Manage the end-to-end project lifecycle, including planning, design, construction, commissioning, and handover.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including IT, operations, and customer service, to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules, budgets, and resource plans.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and best practices.
  • Identify and mitigate project risks, resolving issues promptly to keep projects on track.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and excellence within the team.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for team members.
  • Lead innovative design techniques to enhance data center efficiency and performance.
  • Manage and coordinate the efforts of electrical and mechanical engineers to ensure the successful integration of all systems.
  • Oversee the implementation of cutting-edge technologies and best practices in data center design and operations.
  • Create, refine, and maintain a comprehensive turnover checklist for the operations team for data center suite handovers.
  • Take part in data center strategy planning, cost analysis, and provider business reviews.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in data center design, construction, and operations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years technical project management, program management, mission-critical electrical infrastructure.
  • 12+ years in direct data center construction experience at a data center provider or constructor.
  • Experience in management, engineering, or operations of hyper-scale datacenter critical environments.
  • Proficient in AutoCad and/or Revit as well as implementation or maintenance of DCIM applications.
  • Ability to manage, prioritize and successfully execute multiple concurrent mission-critical projects and communicate effectively to drive standards and consensus across multiple levels of the organization.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing large-scale data center projects.
  • Strong project management skills, with PMP or similar certification preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of data center infrastructure, including power, cooling, and connectivity systems.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to identify potential risks and develop effective mitigation strategies.
  • Experience in selecting, negotiating, and managing contracts with vendors and contractors.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulations and industry standards.
  • Verbal and written communication skills for effective stakeholder engagement.

The pay range for this role is $149,000 to $247,000. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience, certifications, and specific work location. This may be different in other locations due to differences in the cost of labor.
