POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Engineering Manager will oversee the planning, design, and execution of all engineering efforts related to capital projects. The capital projects tend to be the design and construction of large industrial facilities, typically in the cement, mining, aggregates, and general bulk material handling space. The vast majority of engineering work is outsourced; however the Engineering Manager will be the focal point tasked with leading and coordinating with the various engineering firms. This role requires a highly experienced professional with a deep understanding of engineering principles across the various engineering disciplines, construction management, competitive procurement, project management, and sustainability practices. The Engineering Manager will be responsible for ensuring that all , engineering scopes are appropriately defined, completed on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality, safety, and permitting and regulatory requirements.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead all engineering efforts related to capital projects.
- Develop comprehensive project engineering plans by working mostly with external engineering firms.
- Contribute to the selection and management of contractors, architects, engineers, and other consultants to ensure successful project delivery.
- Conduct site visits as appropriate to ensure engineering plans are being followed.
- Identifying engineering issues and risks, as well as identifying potential solutions.
- Contribute heavily during the start-up and commissioning phase of a project, working with the team to troubleshoot and implement solutions.
Engineering Oversight:
- Provide technical leadership in the design, construction, and maintenance, including structural, mechanical, electrical, and life safety systems.
- Ensure that all engineering projects meet regulatory requirements, industry standards, and company specifications.
Sustainability and Innovation:
- Lead the implementation of sustainability initiatives across all construction and engineering projects
- Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends, incorporating innovative solutions that enhance the efficiency, sustainability, and resilience of the portfolio.
Budgeting and Financial Management:
- Contribute to the development and management of the capital construction and engineering budget, ensuring alignment with the company’s financial objectives.
- Monitor project costs and financial performance, providing regular updates to senior management and stakeholders.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities through value engineering and strategic sourcing without compromising quality or safety.
Team Leadership and Development:
- Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing team of internal and external engineers , and project managers, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
- Provide ongoing training and development opportunities for team members to enhance their skills and advance their careers.
Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure all engineering designs and activities comply with local, state, and federal regulations, including building codes, environmental laws, and OSHA requirements.
- Conduct regular site inspections and audits to ensure compliance and identify areas for improvement.
Reporting and Communication:
- Prepare and present detailed reports on project progress, budgets, and risks to senior management and other stakeholders.
- Maintain clear and open communication with all project stakeholders, ensuring that expectations are managed and any issues are promptly addressed.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical and engineering concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify technical issues and propose practical solutions with a very high attention to details.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
- Familiarity with project management concepts.
- High level of integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical field, preference on structural engineering.
- Professional Engineer license is preferred. Project Management Professional (PMP) certification also a plus.
- Advanced degrees such as a Master’s are a plus.
- 10+ years in engineering management, managing multi-disciplinary teams (structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, process, instrumentation, and control engineers).
- Basic proficiency in 3D modeling software (SolidWorks or AutoCAD Inventor) and Product Document Management Systems (PDM).
- Experience implementing and managing a design review process.
