Client Summary:
Leading national provider of technical services to the electric utility, power generation, industrial, renewable and energy industries.
Primary Function:
Perform design duties using high-level design skills and techniques for medium/high voltage substation or transmission line projects. Assignments are minimally unsupervised and are assigned for the employee to execute civil/structural scopes for projects while implementing corporate/client standards, and procedures. Civil Designers will be dedicated to Civil/Structural design projects, but will assist on Electrical or Transmission design projects as needed.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Employee may be called upon to perform any or all of the following functions:
- Execute and complete the entire project with minimal effort; handle and coordinate all civil/structural design activities at the project level, ensuring that all engineering design is completed on schedule, on budget, and in accordance with client and company-established work procedures and quality.
- Function as Lead Designer and Checker for large or multiple small projects when required.
- Resolve design issues and problems.
- Responsible for ensuring civil/structural project deliverables are checked and meet industry, client, and company quality standards.
- Direct drafting team to create new drawings from examples of previous project and/or standards.
- Produce Engineering support tasks with minimal supervision.
- Work with civil/structural lead or design engineer in planning and design layout.
- Coordinate with other discipline lead designers and assist the lead engineer or discipline lead to ensure an effective quality product.
- Conduct field investigations and plant site visits when needed, assist the lead engineer to produce investigation reports if necessary.
- Stay current on new design processes, 2D and 3D modeling, drafting techniques, and standards.
- Produce Foundation Location Plan drawings from project's General Arrangement and/or Electrical Plan.
- Oversee the development of the foundation and structural details of the drafting team.
- Calculate and check foundation concrete cubic yardage, foundation reinforcing, and verifying foundation sizes.
- Strong understanding of oil containment pit design and sizing; and developing unconventional pit designs as required for projects.
- Produce detailed steel designs, utilizing standards and non-standard (customized) structural designs.
- Develop alternative/unconventional steel, foundation design to accommodate project requirements/field conditions.
- Create Substation Bill of Materials, including manufacturer part numbers, quantities, structure variables (“L” dimension), etc.
- Complete work in pre-defined times to meet proposal and project schedules.
- Strong knowledge of where to find applicable go-bys.
- Provide mentoring and training for the development of peers.
- Strong knowledge of substation terminology and symbology.
- Apply extensive knowledge of corporate and client standards to drafting, design, and engineering practices.
- Good understanding of industry standards such as ANSI, ASCE, ASTM, ACI, NEC, IEEE, NFPA, etc.
- Bring potential project-related problems and possible solutions to the attention of the responsible party.
- Expert-level knowledge of industry equipment/material providers.
- Perform complete reviews of vendor approval packages.
- Back-check peer’s drawings for quality control.
- Perform formal QA/QC on other projects (cold eye/blind reviews).
- Properly use the document management system.
- Take personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of his/her work.
- May be required to communicate directly with the client in checking in/out drawings or requesting new drawing numbers.
- Travel out of town for short periods of time as required by projects and assignments.
- Investigate and resolve unusual design and field engineering problems by devising new approaches or applying existing criteria in novel ways.
- Unescorted site visits to energized substations or industrial installations.
- Attend project kickoff meetings.
Minimum Qualifications/Skills:
- An associate degree in drafting & design is required. A certificate in drafting & design with relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of an associate degree
- Minimum 12 years of relevant/compatible civil/structural design experienceand thorough knowledge of civil/structural design.
- You must be able to function as Lead Designer, Checker/QAQC and 2D/3D drafter as needed.
- Experience with Microstation is a plus, but not required.
- 3D modeling experience is a plus, but not required.
- Capable of preparing both 2D and 3D design drawings in an accurate manner that meets the industry, client, and company quality standards.
- College-level geometry.
- Demonstrate ability to adapt to changes in technology.
- Ability to integrate new technologies into daily work processes.
- Experience working with other disciplines and understanding their interface requirements.
- In-depth knowledge of civil/structural standards, methods, and practices.
- Strong skills in word processing, spreadsheet, and e-mail software.
- Expert-level knowledge of various CADD programs including but not limited to: AutoCAD, Microstation, and Navisworks.
- Advanced knowledge of civil/structural layout and design complying with industry standards
- Well-versed with OSHA & PIP Standards.
- Expert-level capabilities in drafting, scaling, drawing layout, and a high degree of accuracy in copying/using go-bys.

- Communicating effectively, both written and verbal, with co-workers.
