Job Summary & Responsibilities

The core responsibility of the Systems Scientist position is to support the research and development effort for advanced metrology systems enabling Onto Innovation's ability to deliver new and/or improved metrology equipment to the semiconductor industry. The successful candidate will define and run proof-of-concept experiments that align with the new technology requirements defined by the roadmap team. He or she will interface with cross functional engineering teams, e.g. software, hardware and applications scientists, to generate specifications and performance requirements that guide systems development. They will also design and perform experiments that validate those requirements have been met and provide guidance on implementation improvements where needed.

  • Define technology supporting the Onto Innovation product line roadmap goals
  • Design proof-of-concept experiments
  • Alignment, optimization, and validation of complex optical systems
  • Design and conduct experiments to characterize, troubleshoot, and improve complex optical metrology systems or sub-systems
  • Independently drive progress on experiments, requesting support from coworkers as needed
  • Support the design team during the design phase
  • Validate resulting designs
  • Generate specification of the product including sub-system performance specifications
  • Write/submit invention disclosures related to system design/architecture work
  • Prepare and present system architectural designs & validation data to both internal and external customers
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts to technical and non-technical audience


Qualifications

Candidate for this position must have met minimum requirements to be considered for this position

  • PhD in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics, Optical Sciences or Material Sciences with hands-on experience with lasers and optics
  • Experience in designing experiments using optical setups and data acquisition hardware
  • Experience in working with high intensity ultrafast laser systems
  • Knowledge of non-linear optical processes
  • Experience working on prototype systems in a hands-on laboratory setting
  • Working knowledge of Labview, Matlab, or Mathematica is desirable
  • Excellent analytical capability for systematic troubleshooting
  • Possess good interpersonal skills and willing to work in a team environment


Additional desirable skillsets:
  • Automation of hardware control - Labview, C++, C#
  • Electrical soldering, cabling, and knowledge of grounding best practices.
  • PCB level board troubleshooting
  • Programming experience in C++, C#
  • Firmware programming in C, VHDL, Verilog
  • Signal processing algorithm development experience - DSP, FFT, PCA, Wavelet
  • Machine learning algorithm development experience
