Trails & Natural Lands Division DirectorJob Description:Salt Lake City Public Lands is hiring a Trails and Natural Lands Division Director! The Trails and Natural Lands team is responsible for management of natural areas including riparian areas, Foothill natural areas and nature preserves located along the Jordan River and its tributaries. This position will manage a team of dedicated natural resource managers that care and steward these unique public spaces. The Division strives to manage these resources in a way that protects the natural environment while also providing recreational opportunities for the residents of Salt Lake City to safely enjoy and recreate within Salt Lake City's Public Lands.ABOUT THE POSITION:This critical position will play a key role in providing the Department of Public Lands with strategic leadership to accomplish the Department's mission and goals outlined in the Reimagine Nature Master Plan. The Director will work with a diverse team within Public Lands to lead day-to-day operations, develop operational work plans, and communicate complex and high-profile projects that support the Department. The position will work closely with the Park Ranger Program to assist in the development of educational, outreach, and volunteer programming to support stewardship, protection, and activation of Public Lands. The Director will assist in fostering a positive team culture and promote strategies to ensure responsiveness and continuous improvement of the organization.TYPICAL DUTIES:Division ManagementManages, develops and coordinates all City Trails and Natural Lands Division functions associated with acquisition, management, promotion, preservation, protection, enhancement and disposal of open space lands.Hires and manages all staff within the Division and manages employee job performance, including Operations supervisor, Recreational Trails Manager, Restoration Ecologist, Natural Resource Technicians and seasonal staff. Conducts performance evaluations, counsels division employees concerning performance, and recommends personnel actions in the areas of hiring, termination, promotion, and discipline.In coordination with staff Restoration Ecologist and Natural Lands Operations Supervisor, develops operational management plans on City-owned land, and coordinates and implements the Public Lands Reimagine Nature Master Plan, the Foothill Trail System Plan and other associated internal planning documents.Establishes relationships and maintains communications with local community leaders and interest groups. Implements land planning efforts with sister City agencies, county government, the federal government, local tribal leaders and local communities.Participates in staff preparation of presentations, public meetings and hearings aimed at discussing management of the Trails and Natural Land Division. Assists staff in negotiations with interest groups.Process Improvement:Responsible for developing, amending and maintaining the process and procedures associated with acquisition of open space and development an open space acquisition plan.Responsible for fund raising and securing funds outside the City for open space acquisition projects through grants, partnerships, donations, requests or other means available by law.Reviews and analyzes pertinent data from academic and professional sources; performs research, assists in the identification of land for possible park and open space and reviews existing and proposed uses in the area to improve consistent and prioritized management of Natural Lands.Coordinates the preparation and ongoing update of a City Natural Lands Inventory Map that includes open space property within the City, outside City limits, or any property contributed or acquired by the City for the purposes of preserving, developing or restoring open space land.Budget Management & Analysis:Assists with preparation and administration of the Division’s budget and other financial activities. Performs financial analysis on projects, as needed, to ensure proper accounting of costs and benchmarks for completion.Performs other related duties as assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in Natural Resource Management, Parks, Recreation and Tourism, Public Administration, Urban Planning, Geography, Earth Sciences or a related field, plus four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in land conservation, open space management and park planning and development.Ability to coordinate the work of others and communicate effectively both orally and in writing with individuals of diverse backgrounds and professional levels.Working knowledge of contract administration related to municipal projects. Experience in managing professional consultants’ contracts with an emphasis on procurement, negotiation, and execution.Knowledge of current trends in parks and recreation facility development.WORKING CONDITIONS:Little or no physical effort, most work performed in office environment. Comfortable working positions, handling of light weights.
