Job Title: Director, Division of Wildlife Resources
Job Description:
This is an executive-level job that exercises considerable discretion and judgment in providing direction and leadership to the Division of Wildlife Resources. The incumbent in this job reports to the Executive Director and Deputy Director of the Department of Natural Resources. The incumbent directs the division's management team, state wildlife programs and activities; determines goals, resource allocations, and priorities consistent with state and federal law, regulations, and proclamations set by the Wildlife Board, and the Department of Natural Resources; develops and implements policies and procedures to govern programs and activities; serves as the secretary and advisor to Wildlife Board on establishing regulations and proclamations for wildlife resources; oversees the preparation of division's budget to be presented to the Governor consistent with the Executive Director's guidelines. The incumbent determines the final allocation of legislative appropriation among sections and programs; develops and directs communication channels with division resource users, state and federal administrators, and boards; determines division position for media or the public. As a member of the Division of Law Enforcement Advisory Committee, incumbents have leadership, supervisory, and administrative responsibilities over law enforcement officers. Incumbent in this job is appointed by the Executive Director of the Department of Natural Resources and is exempt from state career service.
Job Duties:As the Director of the Division of Wildlife Resources, you will:
Direct the planning and administration of statewide wildlife programs including aquatic, wildlife, habitat, and public services.
Coordinate and communicate division goals and direction with other state, federal, and local agencies and organizations to maximize resource benefits.
Develop and implement guidelines, time frames, and accuracy levels for division programs and strategies.
Direct preparation of the division budget and assure consistency with the Executive Director's budget guidelines.
Evaluate division effectiveness and maximize efficient use of division funds and personnel.
Implement Wildlife Board policies.
Oversee all division personnel matters, and develop performance plans and evaluations for subordinates.
Promote professional wildlife management.
Work with the legislature and other elected officials to define and implement state policies, statutes, and rules.
Utah Code 23-14-7 Functions and Qualifications of Director
(1) The director shall:
(a) be the executive and administrative head of the Division of Wildlife Resources; and
(b) have shown ability in management and administration, along with experience in protecting, conserving, restoring, and managing wildlife resources.
(2) The director may not hold any other public office or be involved in a political party or organization.
The Ideal Candidate:The ideal candidate will possess:
at least 10 years of demonstrated successful work experience in a wildlife-related field
at least 10 years of demonstrated successful work experience in a leadership position
a Master's Degree in a natural resource management field, wildlife biology, public administration, or another closely related field
previous personnel management and supervisory experience
the ability to find creative, pragmatic ways to solve problems and improve processes
experience managing budgets and an understanding of the principles and practices related to budget management
knowledge of state and federal wildlife laws
demonstrated abilities to build collaborative, solution-based partnerships and work with diverse people
the ability to communicate information and ideas clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
demonstrated knowledge and experience with principles of big game management
Best qualified individuals
will possess knowledge and skills in fishery, wildlife science, or related fields, obtained through education, previous experience, or a combination of education and experience.

Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary between both plans (pension and 401(k))
Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.
Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years.
Paid Time Off:
Annual and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual, 4 hours sick).
Annual leave amounts increase with years of service.
*As a director, you will earn 7 hours of annual per pay period.

Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
This position has been designated as a Law Enforcement Administrative Position under 49-15-201 (8) which allows POST-certified employee(s) to remain in the public safety retirement system when promoted into administrative positions. In order to remain in the Public Safety retirement system incumbent must maintain POST certification. Non-certified incumbents shall be placed/remain in the standard retirement system.
