Director of Underwriting / Chief Underwriter

position in our Honolulu office.

The

Director of Underwriting / Chief Underwriter

is responsible for the Underwriting, New Business, and Policy Change activities of the individual life insurance and annuity lines of business at Pacific Guardian Life. The person in this role will; analyze and assess life insurance risks, recommend and implement approved underwriting policies and procedures, be familiar with annuity suitability regulations and monitor appropriate suitability reviews, and coordinate underwriting activities between the Home Office and the field force. The Director of Underwriting is generally responsible for ensuring that the Company’s underwriting procedures and suitability guidelines, systems and controls are aligned to ensure that the risks accepted by the Company are consistent with the pricing assumptions of the underlying product/contract issued as well as all regulatory requirements. Must be a Fellow, Academy of Life Underwriting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in business, management or related field from an accredited college or university.

Minimum of five (5) years of progressively increasing experience in home office life and annuity underwriting. Three (3) or more years of leadership experience in the insurance industry required.

Strong communication/interpersonal skills with emphasis on customer service, conflict management, teamwork and coaching skills.

Home office underwriting experience in a personal producing general agency or brokerage environment is desirable. Field underwriting experience is desirable.

Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.

In depth knowledge of underwriting procedures, systems and risk assessment (includes medical and financial underwriting. Ability to personally underwrite business at an appropriate level given the Company’s then current circumstances.

Appreciation and understanding of the field force’s point of view; ability to withstand pressures from the field force when necessary to conform to sound underwriting standards and Company practices.

Ability to test the adequacy and sufficiency of life and health underwriting guidelines and procedures continually in day-to-day handling of cases and to recommend changes, as needed.

Ability to integrate a complete understanding of Company policies and procedures with advanced technical underwriting knowledge and experience highly desirable.

Well organized and attentive to detail. Must be able to prioritize work and meet critical deadlines. Must display excellent judgment when dealing with information that is confidential in nature.

Accountability for compliance with underwriting and issue regulations and audits (HIPAA, state specific, reinsurance, MIB, etc.)

Professional credentials preferred (e.g. FLMI, FALU, CLU, ChFC).

Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Salary: $110k – $150k, depending on experience
