Job Overview
Under general supervision, coordinate the daily operations (driver, route, and vehicle activities) necessary to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable transportation services for our students by ensuring that all bus routes are covered by securing substitutes when regular bus drivers and/or bus monitors are absent and/or rerouting bus drivers when accidents or breakdowns occur and serving as the operation's center of communications by receiving and/or dispersing critical information relevant to running a comprehensive school bus operation

Position Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Operation

  • Effectively cover bus routes using substitutes as well as other drivers with downtime and inform schools of all changes in bus assignment on a daily basis
  • Act as a communication liaison through the two-way radio system and answer incoming phone/radio emergency/non-emergency calls, record significant information, address problems and requests by transmitting information or providing solutions
  • Provide assistance to driving staff and exercise discretionary judgment as necessary to ensure that routes and trips are performed safely and on-time
  • Monitor any sudden route changes due to road constructions issues, breakdowns, emergency situations and notify drivers, parents, campus personnel of possible route delays
  • Responsible for the keyboard, two-way radio system, assigning buses and maintaining a daily log of bus operations, and activities, including breakdowns, and calls to police, parents, schools and administration
  • Coordinate emergency response network during a bus accident, breakdowns or other transportation emergency and provide information to key personnel
  • Coordinate vehicle preventive maintenance service schedules with Shop Manager to assure uninterrupted services due to PM's
  • Coordinate the use of district vehicles, assist in the review of routes & schedules and recommend any operational changes to maximize route safety, asset utilization and operation efficiency
  • Cooperate with other members of the Transportation Department and Operations Staff to ensure the continuation of a safe and smooth operation
  • Monitor radio etiquette and proper radio use between drivers and self and report all major problems and/or irregularities to the Operations Manager
  • Locate responsible parties to receive special needs students when parents or guardians are not available
  • Act as a substitute bus driver as needed
Administration
  • Receive land-line telephone calls, take messages, decimate/relate pertinent information or respond to inquiries from public or concern parties on rules, regulations applicable to the operation of school buses and transporting students and methods of scheduling and dispatching a school transportation fleet
  • Maintain in a neat and orderly fashion a current set of files on each route to include all information needed to describe the route (regular/special ed) and its component parts (program, school, map, assigned vehicle, list of passengers assigned buses, assigned drivers/monitor)
  • Develops recommendations regarding safety needs of Special Education students for the purpose of ensuring that student's needs are met during transport to/from school
  • Maintain daily log of all substitute drivers and driver's work assignments, track absenteeism, collect and prepare data for records and reports
  • Attend professional development activities/programs to keep abreast of developments and innovations in area of transportation
  • Perform related general clerical work as required or assigned
