Job Description
A professional nurse that collaborates with the Director of Nursing for Nursing Professional Development in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating orientation and continuing education programs, both at the unit and/or departmental level. She/he serves as a role model and a resource person for the nursing staff. She/he assumes 24 hour responsibility for staff development and practice in assigned areas in collaboration with unit management.
Job Responsibilities:
- Identifies and utilizes specific learning needs prior to designing education programs/sessions.
- Interprets staff learning needs to the line managers, engaging staff support for needed offerings.
- Develops appropriate behavioral objectives and content outline on a timely manner.
- Utilizes current medical/nursing literature during preparation.
- Plans educational calendar according to the specific needs of the assigned areas.
- Utilizes principles of adult teaching-learning process during classroom/clinical activities.
- Demonstrates knowledge of various teaching methodologies.
- Selects and uses appropriate audiovisual aides to enhance the learning process.
- Communicates clearly, according to the level of the learner, during classroom/clinical presentation.
- Creates an environment conducive to learning.
- Performs all other tasks assigned by supervisor and/or designee.
Minimum Qualifications
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
3. A Master's Degree in Nursing, or a related nursing or education field, from an accredited college or university; and
4. Three (3) years of experience as a registered nurse in specialty area(s), including:
a. One (1) year providing nursing education and training in specialty area(s); or
b. Holds a valid and current certification as a Nurse Educator.
For Assignment to Nurse Educator Level II
1. In addition to meeting the qualification requirements of Nurse Educator Level I, must be assigned to a highly specialized area (e.g., critical care, emergency services, perioperative care) or to a group of specialty areas.
