Consider joining the Duke Energy team, where you'll find a friendly work environment, opportunities for growth and development, recognition for your work, and competitive pay and benefits.The State Government Affairs Director has the responsibility for effectively managing and influencing the relationships with governmental officials and bodies to support the strategic legislative aims and interests of Duke Energy and its business units.This position serves as the company's registered lobbyist in the state and is responsible for lobbying activities involving the state's Legislative and Executive Branch. The State Government Affairs Director executes the company's legislative strategy and coordinates with other companies, statewide businesses, industry organizations, coalitions, and special interest groups to foster and promote the interests of Duke Energy. This position reports to the Vice President - Government Affairs.ResponsibilitiesProvide clear overall direction and guidance to contract lobbyists and consultants in relation to the execution of legislative strategy; promote high morale and performance and effective teamwork with others in the department and company.Ensure that a well-conceived position is established on state issues important to the company's strategic interests and that the position is effectively communicated to the appropriate members of the Legislature, the Executive Branch and their staffs in order to achieve the desired policy outcomes.Ensure effective relationships with members of the Legislature and of the Executive Branch and their staffs, with a special emphasis on Senate and House leadership and members chairing committees that can affect the company's strategic interests.Monitor the Legislature and the state Executive Branch; alert, advise, and consult with upper management and the business units about state issues or political developments that could benefit or harm the company; work with internal subject matter experts to ensure accurate and timely analysis and tracking of relevant legislation.Direct strategy for initiating grassroots or third party actions on legislative or environmental issues; coordinate state legislative and environmental strategy with other companies, business and industry organizations, special interest groups; when necessary, create statewide third-party organizations and coalitions to advance the company's interests.Support the employees' Political Action Committees by providing legislative updates for informational purposes during regular PAC meetings and at other times or in other formats as requested.Job-specific knowledge or skillsExtensive understanding of the state legislative process and the state political arenaAbility to communicate effectively on complex policy issues with executive management and with members of the state legislature and their staffsAbility to represent the company effectively in influential public forumsAbility to build relationships people effectivelyStrong initiative and sound judgment to operate in fluid situations.Basic/Required QualificationsBachelor's degree in communications, business administration, business management, political science or other related degreeIn addition to bachelor's degree, seven (7) years minimum of related work experienceEligible to register as a legislative lobbyist in the state.Desired QualificationsMaster's degree in business administration, Legal degree or equivalent.Experience as a registered lobbyistExperience working with business groups and grassroots initiatives.A working knowledge of the electric, natural gas, or telecommunications industry, Utility franchise, and municipalization concepts and strategies.Effective negotiation skills, strategic planning development, implementation and tracking.Strong written and verbal communications skills.Highly effective interpersonal and influencing skills.Working ConditionsM - F, however, must have ability to attend early morning, night, and weekend governmental/community meetingsAbility to work extended days, particularly during the legislative sessionAbility to travel throughout the state and spend occasional evenings away from homeTravel: day travel of up to two to three hours each way; overnight travel of approximately three to five times a year.Onsite mobility classification - work will be performed at Duke Energy Columbia, SC Office.Requires availability 24/7#LI-AB1#LI-OnsiteTravel Requirements15-25% Relocation Assistance Provided (as applicable)No Represented/Union PositionNo Visa Sponsored PositionNo
