DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The work involves providing expanded clinical services to patients by providing primary care under the direction of a physician at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC). The incumbent exercises independent judgment and initiative in counseling and screening patients, providing routine physical examinations and dispensing medications within medical guidelines. The incumbent acts as resource person and exercises supervision over nursing and para-professional staff. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Supervises and directs staff, nursing and paraprofessional staff;
Interviews patients, obtains medical histories, and performs comprehensive physical examinations;
Initiates orders and interprets a broad range of diagnostic tests;
Diagnoses and treats patients with acute and chronic illnesses;
Monitors, detects changes and renders care for those patients with acute and chronic illnesses and modifies treatment plans as needed;
Acts as a resource person on nursing care problems;
Adheres to medical and nursing protocol;
Consults with healthcare professionals;
Educates patients and families about medical conditions and treatment plans;
Monitors and operates medical equipment as needed;
Orders and administers medications;
Attends meetings, seminars and information sessions relating to nursing activities;
Ensures medical records reflect symptoms, treatments and administration of prescribed and over-the-counter medications;
Maintains appropriate records and prepares reports, makes suggestions and recommendations on nursing care problems.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Thorough knowledge of health principles, practices and techniques; thorough knowledge of physical examination and diagnosis procedures, equipment and skill in performing such examinations and procedures; good knowledge of the current developments, literature and sources of information in the field of health services; ability to establish and maintains good public and inter-personal relations; ability to supervise and direct subordinate staff; ability to prepare oral and written reports; tact; dependability; initiative; confidentiality; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a Master's degree* in Nursing and:
A) one (1) year experience as a Nurse Practitioner in a certified specialty area, or
B) one (1) year experience as a Registered Professional Nurse.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse and a Nurse Practitioner
license that specifies specialty area in New York State at time of appointment and maintenance of licenses throughout duration of appointment; and
Possession of a Nurse Practitioner certification as issued by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) at time of appointment and maintenance of certification throughout duration of appointment; and
Possession of a current Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number issued by the United States Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment; and
Possession of a certification in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) from an ECMCC approved provider at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.
