The Associate Program Director assists the Program Director in the daily operations of the Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Program and assists in assuring compliance with the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Program's Standards and Guidelines. The doctorally-prepared Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) who is experientially qualified to assist the program administrator and if required, assume leadership responsibility for the program. The Associate Program Director serves as designee for the Program Director and teaches classes as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Assists in ensuring compliance with the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Program's Standards and Guidelines.Assists the Program Director in reviewing student applications and communicating with applicants regarding the application process.Conducts interviews with applicants as part of the admissions committee.Coordinates the clinical rotations of students.Organizes and prepares students for pre-clinical orientation.Performs clinical and didactic evaluation of students.Promotes instructor development.Serves as assistant administrative advisor for all nurse anesthesia students.Prepares and teaches assigned didactic and simulation coursesDevelop and implement policies and practice standards consistent with the School of Anesthesia and simulation in healthcare technology mission statementsCoordinate and direct training activities in the simulation lab in correspondence to didactic teaching to prepare students for clinical experiencesCollaborate with regional, national, and international users to advance the use of simulation technology in healthcare educationAssists the Program Director in coordinating activities and committees to ensure stated program goals are achieved.As directed by the Program Director, communicates with the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Programs, the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA), and faculty.Attends the AANA Assembly of Didactic and Clinical Educators (ADCE) meetings.Contributes to an environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as directed and demonstrates knowledge of environmental issues that influence the program and nurse anesthesia practice by engaging in professional development.
Specific Duties:Function as a role model for students.Advocate and promote optimal educational experiences for students.Assign and monitor student clinical rotations at approved clinical sites. Amend rotationsto meet students' clinical needs as indicated.Track student cases logged into TYPHON® to ensure appropriate rotational experiencesin case and anesthetic types including general and regional anesthetics for generalsurgery, ENT, gynecological, obstetrics, orthopedics, plastics, vascular, urology, painmanagement, endoscopy, and electroshock therapy.Function as a liaison between off-site clinical facilities and clinical coordinators whenrequired through clinical site visits.Participate in student evaluation process - daily and quarterly.Formulate and implement corrective action plans in collaboration with the ProgramDirector as needed for unsatisfactory student performance.Monitor student progress. Assist Program Director in the disciplinary action process as needed.Assign students to on call responsibilities.Assist the Program Director with continuous quality improvement measures.Provide classroom didactic instruction as requested through curriculum committee meeting discussions.Coordinate Simulation Lab teaching modules and training sessions.Solicit feedback from students and other instructors regarding the effectiveness of simulation experiences.Perform periodic review and evaluation of the skills and scenario modules assessing for areas of growth and improvement. Evaluate content of simulation modules through student feedback and curriculum content. Revise modules as needed.Recommend simulation lab and technology equipment upgrades to keep training sessions current and relevant.Promote the interests of the simulation lab through participation in public relationsevents, community outreaches, professional/civic service organizations and committeemeetings as the simulation lab representative.Monitor student progress. Report progress or regress to the Program Director. Assist the Program Director in the disciplinary action process as needed.Maintain student confidentialityMaintain and store data in a secure areaPerform other program related duties as assigned or requested.
Qualifications
Education Required: A Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), or a PhD in Nursing or EdD from an accredited institution of higher education is required.
Experience: Administrative and leadership experience is required.Two-year affiliation with the School of Anesthesia (preferred)Precepting/teaching experience (preferred)Management experience (preferred)Certification in Simulation Education (preferred)
Certifications/Licensure: Current certification or current recertification by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA) is required. A current unencumbered license or privilege to practice as a registered professional nurse (RN) in Pennsylvania is required.
