Position Statement

A successful MCH RN is one who is meticulous and detailed oriented. One should be caring, compassionate and have the knowledge of the aspects of pregnancy, labor, birth, post-partum complications and treatments. The RN should have a broad knowledge of the pediatric population, recognizing normal and abnormal presentation of the child. An RN on MCH will adhere to the AWHONN's professional organizations, standards of care and recommendations.

Key Responsibilities:

* Assessing and monitoring the condition of pregnant patients before, during, and after childbirth* Assisting doctors and midwives in the delivery of babies* Administering medication and conducting necessary medical procedures under the direction of healthcare providers* Coaching mothers during labor, including but not limited to breathing and relaxation techniques* Providing postpartum care to mothers and newborns, including monitoring vital signs, and assisting with breastfeeding* Communicating with patients and their families, explaining procedures, and providing emotional support* Documenting patient information and maintaining accurate medical records* Operating and monitoring medical equipment such as fetal monitors* Identifying any complications or emergencies and responding swiftly* Educating parents about newborn care, including bathing, feeding and cord care

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

* Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) is preferred; Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) accepted.* Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license.* Certification in Inpatient Obstetric Nursing (RNC-OB) or relevant specialty (optional but preferred).* Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification, which can be obtained at NCH during orientation.* Strong clinical assessment and communication skills.* Ability to remain calm and focused in high-pressure situations.* Flexibility to work irregular hours, including nights and weekends.* Commitment to patient-centered care and a positive birthing experience.* Incorporate Evidence-Based best Practice into the daily setting through holistic, quality based with the most up to date research and knowledge.* All successful employees of North Country Hospital follow and adhere to all policies and standards of behavior.* Annual EFM (External Fetal Monitoring) and NICHD terminology in clinical documentation, AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring certification.
