Mission or Goal of Unit: Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center (VCUMC) Pediatric Emergency Department is the region's only Level I American College of Surgeons Verified Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, and the region's only Level I Certified Pediatric Burn Center. The Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine's mission is to give compassionate, family-centric emergency medical care to every patient we see, to provide comprehensive, competitive training for future leaders in the field of pediatric emergency medicine and to elevate the level of pediatric emergency care for our entire community
Chief Purpose of this position: The Pediatric Emergency Medicine is a division of the Department of Emergency Medicine and is seeking candidates with interests in medical education, clinical research and simulation. We are looking to grow these areas in addition to develop and expand into others. We also have a competitive PEM fellowship program with 2 fellows per year, training both emergency medicine and pediatric trained residents.
The Pediatric ED is integrated within the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU, providing care for 28,000+ children per year and growing. In 2023, a new state of the art children's inpatient tower opened with 22 acute care ED beds, medical resuscitation bay, trauma bay and dedicated radiology suite. This is Central Virginia's first stand-alone children's hospital.
Position Responsibilities:
* Clinical - Provides direct patient care within the emergency department, supervising all trainees, non-licensed providers, and non-physician credentialed providers. Clinical obligations will be individualized depending on faculty position assignment. Provides efficient, high quality patient care that reflects current professional practice norms and skills and is consistent with accepted utilization guidelines.* Teaching -Participates in providing core curriculum lectures to medical students, interns, and resident level trainees. As appropriate, participates in ACLS, PALS and ATLS courses. Provides bedside clinical teaching to all trainees within the Emergency Department. Participates in nursing, housestaff, medical student and paramedic educational programs.* Research - Actively participates in Departmental research projects when required. May develop investigator initiated studies as appropriate to sub-specialty training and interest* Other/Administrative: May serve on School of Medicine, Health System or Departmental Committees as assigned and/or according to interest.* The ideal candidate will work at least 50% of their clinical obligation staffing overnight shifts.
Required Qualifications:
* Unrestricted Virginia Medical license or ability to qualify for one.* Board Certified/Board Eligible in Pediatric Emergency Medicine.* Graduate from a Pediatric Residency program.* Completion of a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship.* Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
