Mission or Goal of Unit: VCU Medical Center, which is a largely underserved, Level 1 Trauma Center and tertiary referral center sees over 100,000 patients per year. The department is nationally recognized for innovative management of chest pain, stroke, major trauma, medical management of EMS and for providing medical direction for aeromedical transport. In addition, the Virginia Poison Center is a division component of this department. The VCU Department of Emergency Medicine also provides coverage for a free-standing Emergency Department serving the rural patient community of New Kent, Virginia, which sees over 15,000 patients per year and community hospitals in Tappahannock, Virginia and South Hill, Virginia which see 20,000 patients per year and 25,000 patients per year, respectively. Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Emergency Medicine houses an Emergency Medicine 3-year residency program. We also partner with the Air Force and train their residents as well and are one of only 12 programs to house a combined Emergency Medicine-Internal Medicine residency program with an additional 2 residents per year. Faculty may be recruited at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or full Professor commensurate with experience.
Chief Purpose of this position: We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to join our dynamic academic emergency medicine team. The candidate will contribute to our mission of providing exceptional patient care, innovative research, and high-quality education in emergency medicine. This position supports the department mission by providing clinical experience in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine by virtue of residency training and/or Board certification in both Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine.
Position Responsibilities:
Clinical - Provide direct patient care within the emergency department, clinical decision unit and proper care clinic, supervising all trainees, non-licensed providers, and non-physician credentialed providers in the clinical arena. Clinical obligations will be individualized depending on faculty position assignment. Provide efficient, high quality patient care that reflects current professional practice norms and skills and is consistent with accepted utilization guidelines. Documents each patient encounter with a timely, comprehensive note in the ED (Emergency Department), CDU (Clinical Decision Unit), or virtual clinic visit. Demonstrate professional and courteous behavior towards patients, department staff and members of the hospital community. Fulfill billing and coding responsibilities as defined in the scope of practice. Abide by the department's operational manual, policies, and procedures. Abide by hospital rules and regulations, medical staff bylaws, credentialing requirements, and MCVH's policies and procedures. Demonstrate a willingness to fill uncovered shifts due to illness, disasters, and overwhelming acute patient volumes in proportion to clinical commitment.
Teaching -Participate in providing core curriculum lectures to medical students, interns, and resident level trainees. As appropriate, participates in ACLS, PALS and ATLS courses. Provides bedside clinical teaching to all trainees within the Emergency Department, Clinical Decision Unit and Proper care clinic. Participates in nursing, house staff, medical student, advanced practice provider and paramedic educational programs.
Research - Actively identify areas of interest and participate in Departmental research projects.
Administrative - Attend department staff meetings unless on clinical duty. Participate in and adhere to quality improvement and utilization review activities. Participates in relevant marketing and public relations activities on behalf of the hospital and Emergency Department. Participates in appropriate medical staff and hospital committees as assigned. Completes, in a timely manner, all reports and requests for information from the Department Chair, Vice-Chair and the SOM.
Service - When required, participate as a representative of the VCU Health System. Assignments could span the full spectrum of healthcare or be in a specific area of interest to the incumbent.
Required Qualifications:
* Board Certified/Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine* Graduate of accredited Medical School* Active Virginia Medical license and DEA license* Completion of an Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine Residency Program* Completion of an Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine residency within 3 years (If beyond 3 years of completing accredited Emergency Medicine residency program, must have completed 1500 hours of clinical activity in the past 3 years in an Emergency Department of comparable size, volume, and patient acuity and can be waived at the discretion of the Chair)* Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
