Position Purpose
Under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, the aide will support individual students, small groups, and/or whole classroom activities. The aide will ensure that students have full access to classroom materials and activities and receive the social and emotional support needed to be successful in their role as a student at Oradell Public School.
Essential Job Functions
- Oversee and assist students in academic work including ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, and specials.
- Work with individuals and small groups to reinforce basic learning and classroom assignments and activities.
- Supporting students with special needs in all aspects of classroom instruction to maximize inclusion, learning, achievement of IEP objectives, etc.
- Assist teacher in supporting student academic, social, and emotional growth in the classroom.
- Assist with record-keeping procedures to document student learning and performance.
- Collecting data regarding individual behavior plans and classwide reinforcement systems.
- Assist with classroom behavioral management to minimize disruptions, ensure a safe and orderly classroom, and ensure students are on task.
- Support students in less structured activities where applicable including lunch, recess, and hallways.
- Accompany student(s) on field trips.
- Collaborate with the child study team (CST), related service providers, and various teachers in order to ensure effective services and supports are in place for students.
- Assist students with varying ability levels with activities of daily living for the purpose of maximizing their ability to participate in school or learning activities.
- Follow all applicable safety rules, procedures, and regulations while assisting students, including those with disabilities or other special needs.
Additional Duties:
- Assist faculty, staff, and building administrators, as needed.
- Perform any other related duties as assigned.
Equipment
- Use standard office equipment when and where applicable as well as devices that students may use to access learning (chromebook/laptop, photocopier, adaptive equipment).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to carry out instructions in both written and oral form.
- Ability to perform basic math and ELA tasks in the role of assisting students.
- Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Google tools, Word, etc).
- Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.
- Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with all students.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and other stakeholders.
- Ability to report work orally or in writing to the supervisor as required.
- Effective writing and verbal communication skills.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
- School building environment.
- Ability to work outdoors when applicable (ex. outdoor student activities).
Qualifications Profile
- Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Prior experience working with special needs children desirable.
