Overview

Position Highlights:

* PRN* Hours: 10 Hour Day Shifts* Location: Lombard

To provide critical care to patients before and after surgery. Recovery nurses treat a wide range of patients, from newborns to the elderly. They clean wounds, administer medication and monitor the progress of the patients' conditions.

Responsibilities

What You Will Do

* Adheres to the Center's policies and procedures and the Profession Standards of Nursing Practice.* Provides professional nursing care by utilizing the nursing process to care for patients.* Assesses patient needs, problems, and concerns.* Prioritizes above for action with consultation as needed, including notification of physician of changes in patients' condition.* Makes plan for patient care.* Provides direct nursing care, including observation and prescribed treatments.* Administers and controls narcotics and medications.* Maintains patient records and charts. Demonstrates appropriate documentation skills* Evaluates outcomes of care and adjusts nursing care processes as necessary with consultation as needed, and participates in continuous quality improvement activities.* Participates in conferences, committee meetings, staff development, and educational programs to meet personal, professional, institutional certification, and regulatory requirements.* Institutes emergency care appropriately, accurately and professionally.* Accepts responsibility for patient safety and assures safe practice.* Demonstrates competency necessary to perform patient care.* Makes pre and post operative phone calls as required.* Restocks area with applicable supplies at the end of the day.* Performs all the nursing department cleaning duties at the end of the day.* Protects the privacy, confidentiality, and security of personal health information.* Performs the PreOperative/PACU Nurse Duties as assigned.

PACU DUTIES

* Assesses patients recovering from anesthesia and makes appropriate judgments for nursing intervention.* Evaluates respiratory status to determine the need for additional intervention; inserts oral or nasal airway as needed.* Monitors patient continuously while patient recovers from anesthesia.* Observes surgical dressings and drainage devices for signs of abnormal bleeding.* Monitors blood pressure, arterial oxygen saturation, respiration, and EKG.* Recognizes life-threatening arrhythmias and initiates appropriate therapy and/or assures assistance.* Performs venipuncture for IV restarts; mixes IV medications; administers IV medication.* Transfers patient to Phase II when discharge criteria from Phase I is met.* Offers patient nourishment as desired. Invites family members to join patient and initiates post op teaching.* Prepares patient for discharge with post operative instruction and teaching.

GI NURSE

* Must be ACLS* Must demonstrate Conscious Sedation Patient Monitoring & Assessment Competencies.

PRE-OP ASSEMENT NURSE DUTIES

* Conducts preoperative interview and patient teaching either over the telephone or in person prior to scheduled surgery.* Confirms the proposed procedure, the date of service and verifies the surgical site.* Confirms the patients understanding of the proposed procedure.* Instructs the patient as to what to expect during the visit to the center.* Obtains health history.* Assesses and evaluates patient and obtains vital signs as required.* Instruct patient to remain NPO, to wear comfortable clothing, to wear no make up or jewelry, and to use no alcohol or tobacco. Instructs patient to review information given by their physician.* Prior to admission for a surgical procedure, the patient shall be informed of the following:* Patients who receive general anesthesia, intravenous sedation, spinal or epidural anesthesia, must not attempt to drive a motor vehicle immediately upon discharge from the facility.* Patients must make arrangements prior to admission for safe transportation from the facility upon discharge to return to home or to a similar environment.* If the patient is a child, gives additional pediatric instructions.* Obtains all information requested on the medical record.* Instructs patient on obtaining lab work and any other pre-operative tests as required.* Has Anesthesia Providers examine and evaluate patient if required.

Qualifications

Education

* Current and valid licensure as a Registered Nurse.* BCLS Certification. (Renewed every two years.)* ACLS Certification GI Registered Nurses.* Pre-op/PACU- ACLS /PALSCertification

Experience

* Minimum two years experience in acute care setting or ambulatory surgery setting.* Minimum two years experience in acute care setting or ambulatory surgery setting.* Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the ages of patients served. Possesses the ability to assess and interpret appropriate data relative to age and to provide care needed as described in the policies and procedures; demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the age group's life span; and possesses an understanding of the range of treatment needed by these patients.* Possesses general knowledge of all equipment and supplies.* Demonstrates knowledge of surgical procedure performed and types and uses of various anesthetic agents by making appropriate nursing assessments and properly positioning patients who are recovering from anesthesia.* Demonstrates knowledge and skill in working with monitors
