Job Description
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Under the guidance of the Nursing Supervisor the Head Nurse ensures the effective and efficient delivery of patient care during the hospital hours of operation. As the Head Nurse, she/he has the responsibility of managing the unit and ensuring that quality care is rendered for every patient assigned to the unit. It is the responsibility of the Head Nurse to coordinate patient care and monitor the performance of nursing personnel assigned to the unit and is held accountable for the use of the nursing process.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1) Coordinates patient care and monitors staff performance.
2) Serve as a resource person to staff members and as a preceptor for new nursing personnel.
3) Ensure documentation of patient care and health education.
4) Demonstrate knowledge of the process whereby:
a) Patients enter the system.
b) Guidelines for managed care patients
c) Admission of patient to hospital
d) Patient clinic appointment
e) Knowledgeable of all procedures performed in the unit and patient's criteria/needs
5) Completes time schedule for staffing and submit to supervisor for approval.
6) Completes annual performance appraisal for nursing staff on his/her unit and submits to Supervisor for review and approval.
7) Maintains attendance profiles on personnel, which will be reviewed periodically.
8) Inform the Nursing Supervisor of incident reports for staff or patients.
9) Assists with disciplinary problems such as lateness and excessive absenteeism.
10) Counsel staff when indicated and makes recommendations for further corrective action.
11) Be aware of the fire safety/evacuation plan and review with staff.
12) Be aware and review with the staff the Disaster Plan.
13) Conducts monthly nursing staff meetings and maintains minutes in a binder on the unit.
14) Make unit rounds with the supervisor.
15) Schedule staff for continuing education and mandatory classes.
16) Ensures a safe and secure environment free of hazards to reduce the risk of injury to all customers.
17) Monitor patient care to ensure:
a) Delivery of direct/indirect patient care.
b) Documentation according to policy and procedure.
c) Patient needs are met.
d) Staff follows the radiation safety policy.
18) Assesses, monitors, and evaluates patients receiving conscious sedation analgesia (pre-intra, post-procedure.)
19) Cardiopulmonary Emergency Management BCLS-ACLS.
20) Peripheral venous cannulation.
21) IV maintenance and site care.
22) Safe use f IV delivery Pump (TVAC).
23) Maintains current population-specific competencies to care for patients undergoing the following procedures and assesses, monitors, and evaluate patients undergoing the following procedures:
a) CAT scan with/without contrast media
b) Angiogram
c) Pyleogram
d) Barium Enema
e) Gall bladder series
f) Pelvis sonogram
g) Hysterosalpingogram
24) Medication administration.
25) Provide education to patient, pre and post procedures.
26) Observe waiting time for patients schedules for procedures.
27) Quality improvement monitoring, ensure that staff nurses collect data for QI and submit written reports monthly and verbal reports quarterly in QI meetings.
28) Check emergency equipment every shift.
29) Conduct risk assessment to reduce adverse events.
30) Ensures that safety management issues are appropriately addressed.
31) Explains, involves and instructs patient's family concerning the therapeutic regimen and environment of care.
32) Effectively utilizes the electronic as well as the paper medical record and ensure the nursing staff are proficient in the same process.
33) Performs any other duties delegated by the Nursing Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and3. One (1) year of experience as a registered nurse.
