FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

PURPOSE: Assists preschool, elementary, or middle school teachers with their instructional duties, while ensuring the teacher retains primary responsibility for designing and implementing educational programs and services.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:Supports individual student(s) or small groups of students to provide additional reinforcement of material taught directly by the classroom teacherAssists students with independent completion of assignments/activities as assigned by the teacher, including provision of individual accommodations or modifications as listed in students' individual plans (i.e., 504, IEP, safety, behavior, etc.)Assists teacher with classroom behavior management to minimize disruptions, maintain a safe and orderly environment, and keep students on taskAssists student(s) in any/all settings within and outside the general/special education classroom as appropriateFollows schedule created by Lead Teacher/DeanCollects data at the direction of the teacher, supervisor, and/or related service providersImplements students' behavior plans as directed by the teacherEmploys positive behavioral strategies when supporting student behaviorFosters independence, socialization, and self-esteem for all studentsSupervises student(s) at lunch, recess, in the hallways during passing periods, before and after school for bus arrival and dismissal, during assemblies, emergency drills, field trips, and at other times as assigned by the building Principal/Dean/Lead TeacherSupports students with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene and toileting, as neededMaintains confidentiality of information about students, staff, and others, and maintains the privacy of student recordsFollows all safety rules, procedures, and regulations for assisting all students, including those with disabilities or special needsAssists the substitute teacher in the classroom teacher's absencePrepares educational materials as neededAttends PLC, staff, and building meetings as directed by the building PrincipalAdheres to Board of Education policies and proceduresOther duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Basic knowledge of childhood growth and developmentGeneral knowledge of academic subjects relevant to position assignmentBasic computer skills for effective communication and proficient use of district software applicationsEffective communication and interpersonal skillsAbility to communicate effectively and follow directionsAbility to understand diverse learning needs, second language instructional practices, and special education accommodations and modifications for childrenAbility to perform duties in a positive, professional mannerAbility to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with othersAbility to promote and follow Board of Education policies, District policies, building and department procedures

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 9 Months/178 Days. The length of the work day is 7 hours to equal 7.5 hours of work and a 30-minute duty free unpaid lunch. Salary to be established by the Board.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Dean/Lead Teacher, Principal, and/or designee in accordance with provisions of Board policy on evaluation of Support Services Personnel.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions:

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee regularly is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to a minimum of 30 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by this job include: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee occasionally types using a keyboard. In the work environment, the employee is regularly exposed to video display and works in a classroom environment. The employee is frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The employee will have contact with the public which requires appropriate demeanor and apparel. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
