Position Summary:
Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and/or Provider, this position acts as an assist during endoscopic procedures and reprocessing per regulatory standards. Prepares procedure rooms for use and cleans the rooms and equipment after use. May assist with more complex procedures.
Assists with maintaining an efficient technical operation in the Endoscopy Unit with the goal of optimal patient care during diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures. Demonstrates appropriate clinical practice and promotes patient advocacy.
This role is trained to independently perform a variety of service-oriented functions in support of patient care through inventory management, quality control testing, equipment and room readiness, patient transport, and all other duties as assigned. In addition, this role assists directly with providing patient care as trained/competent (e.g. endo room assistance, patient monitoring, patient care to include vital signs, ambulation, personal care) and other appropriate tasks.
This position must obtain 10 hours of continuing education every year per regulatory requirements.
Position Responsibilities:
Key Areas of Responsibility
* Performs all duties in accordance with HHC policies, procedures and practices, and regulatory requirements. Models HHC values and H3W behaviors.* Follows AAMI, SGNA, AORN, Joint Commission, CDC, IFUs, State and Federal Guidelines.* Assists with endoscopic procedures, anticipating provider needs. Passes instruments and equipment during procedures.* Performs high-level disinfection of endoscopic equipment and maintains scope reprocessing equipment to ensure appropriate functioning following all established policies, procedures and standards.* May be required to support other areas of surgical services included but not limited to Point of Care testing and EKG as directed by a registered nurse.* Performs all responsibilities as assigned under the GI Endoscopy Technician 1
o Transports patients, equipment and assists in the collection of specimens and transport of specimens to ensure timeliness of patient needs and information
o Prepares patients and treatment room for procedures following all established policies, procedures and standards:
§ Uses proper techniques in all phases of the procedure and at all times.
§ Sets up equipment and supplies and maintains organization throughout the procedure.
§ Assists with the positioning of patients
o Inventory and supply management
§ Checks the integrity of supplies and equipment needed for the endoscopic procedure and ensures that equipment is in proper working order.
§ Maintains carts and equipment in clean working condition and stores in appropriate area when completed
§ Attends conferences, meets with vendors and shares knowledge of new devices that can improve outcomes.
§ Participates in communication and education of staff when vendor releases communications (recall letters, warning letters, updates, change in IFU)
§ Identifies issues (need to change par, increase usage, etc.) and notifies appropriate staff in timely manner to avoid delay of patient care
* May be required to partner with physicians and GI staff to identify specific needs for procedures and ensures items are readily available.* Participates in initiatives such as, but not limited to, quality improvement measures, culture of safety, governance, etc. at the local or regional level, Shares relevant information with unit.* Performs other related duties as required.
Requirements and Specifications:
Education
High school diploma or equivalent
Experience
* Experience as a GI Endoscopy Technician* Proficient in the requirements of the GI Endoscopy Technician 1 position
Licensure, Certification, Registration
* Certified BLS Provider credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained within 2 Months (60 days) of hire date or job transfer date.* Maintain 10 hours of continuing education (CE) or required recertification per regulatory requirements
Language Skills
* Must be able to read and understand oral and written instructions, and effectively communicate information in English.
Knowledge, Skills and Ability Requirements
Maintain scope reprocessing certification from an approved accrediting body. Examples include, but are not limited to, Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or the Certified Board of Sterile Processing Department (CBSPD).
* Demonstrated knowledge of Infection Prevention principles.* Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment with exposure to all patient elements, i. e. bloodborne pathogens.* Ability to learn knowledge and understanding of radiology safety by completing required radiation safety education* Demonstrated ability to identify unsafe practices and partner with team to correct (improper wearing of lead, dosimeters, damaged lead, broken equipment). Shares knowledge that is relevant and valuable with others to support safe practices.* Basic computer skills in order to enter/retrieve data (opening/reading email, basic internet use).* Demonstrated ability to use skillful communication with members of the healthcare delivery team and with patients. Uses communication skills to foster a healthy work environment and facilitate positive patient outcomes and experience.* Lifting techniques.* Organizational skills.* Demonstrated attention to detail in all aspects of work.* Demonstrates fiscal responsibility in time management, resources and use of supplies.* Ability to manage time and productivity without immediate supervision.* Strong customer service skills.
