The Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) will be an integral part of our adult Medical Oncology outpatient practice, seeing adult patients with malignancies of the head and neck.
NPs and PAs are an integral part of cancer care at Mayo Clinic. They see patients at initial consultation and follow established patients, guiding them through their treatment plan in close collaboration with oncologists. The NP or PA manages treatment-related toxicities for patients who are going through standard and research-based cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and immunotherapy. The NP/PA provides care and support for patients during all aspects of their disease course. This includes ordering of curative intent therapy, survivorship care, management of long-term treatment-related toxicities, assessment of disease status, evaluation for clinical trial enrollment and end-of-life care.
The individual NP/ PA will work within the focused Head and Neck Oncology Care Team. This team focuses on managing malignancies of the mouth, tongue, throat, salivary glands and sinuses. The Head and Neck group has a team comprising of Medical Oncologists, APPs, RNs and other allied health professionals. The teams work in close collaboration with colleagues in ENT Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Palliative Care and other multidisciplinary teams. The NP/PA will have a central role on the team to provide continuity for patients, serve as a provider resource for nursing and help with coordination of care across multidisciplinary teams. Multidisciplinary patients are seen in the Oropharynx Clinic and Oral Cavity Clinic alongside colleagues in ENT surgery and radiation oncology. There is also a multidisciplinary survivorship clinic that the APP will have a key role in
Due to the complexity and breadth of the patient population, the ideal NP/PA candidate requires a commitment to challenging and complex patients, excellent communication, strong clinical assessment and teamwork.
