Job Overview:Under indirect supervision, develop and deploy cost effective, timely, high impact capital improvement projects to meet business growth, operational stability, EHS, and production quality needs. This involves providing technical expertise in setting up and analyzing designed experiments in a manufacturing environment, and utilizing excellent interpersonal skills to interact with internal customers and enhance delivered project quality through strategic process and design modifications.
Duties and Responsibilities / Essential FunctionsReasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functionsGather input and collaborate with key stakeholders from Operation, Maintenance, EHS, R&D, IT to identify capital project improvements to address operational deficiencies, meet business opportunity needs and progress in improving manufacturing technology and quality.Maintain relationships and awareness with operations, quality, EHS of ongoing operation challenges and opportunities to develop future state capital projects.Develop staged project deliverables to drive early project feasibility decision making with least effort by leading activities such as scope development, HAZOP, goal deliberation, process flow diagrams, staged design reviews, component and system bid specifications and scope of work, conceptual estimates, project business case presentations and project charters.Execute high quality low risk projects through development of piping and instrumentation diagrams, detail component specifications, layout diagrams, instrument specifications, automated control descriptions.Utilize education foundations in fluid dynamics, heat transfer, process control and unit operations as well as 3rd party expertise in mechanical, civil, structural, electrical and regulatory code compliance for design development, system analysis and design comparisons.Manage project costs through progressive estimate development, competitive bid analysis, coordinate with vendors and subcontractors, project cost management and timely communication with stakeholders in finance and operations.Promote strong stakeholder communication and awareness by means of staged project reviews, goal deliberation, detail design reviews, business case development collaboration, project commissioning and close out planning.Promote innovation in capital improvements by ongoing relationships with equipment, instrumentation, systems vendors, participation in professional development in chemical engineering, instrumentation, automation and project management and dissemination of knowledge to stakeholders.Provide engineering expertise in the manufacturing support of role by working with operations, maintenance, EHS to diagnoses operational performance issues and recommend, design and deploy solutions. Oversees and assesses existing processes and workflows.Coordinate with maintenance to effectively manage the quality, safety, value and timeliness of 3rd party contractors used in capital project execution.Optimizes productivity by designing, implementing and testing new procedures.Assembles reports to document process status and changes.Manage continuous improvement, project management and data analysis.Tracks metrics to discover areas for improvement and monitor upgrades.Communicates findings and proposals to upper management.Provides thorough instructions for successful implementation of process changes.Conducts risk assessments.Assesses compliance with applicable safety and quality standards.Contributes to departmental efforts by accomplishing related tasks as needed.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Use of AUTOCAD, proficiency in use of MS Project, Excel for design computational analysis of piping and unit operations.Ability to navigate projects that will improve overall manufacturing environment which require commitment by operations to fund project, train operations and establish expectations with operators to support and use new systems properly.Familiarity with safety system design, OSHA PSM elements and hazard analysis methods.Excellent analytical and math skillsProficient in continuous improvement.Strong written and verbal communication skillsAbility to persuade others to change existing practicesStrong attention to detailProven ability to identify, assess and solve problemsKnowledge of process engineering software systemsFamiliarity with applicable health and safety regulationStrong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Experience and Education:Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering. Professional Engineering Licensure preferred. Five to ten years’ experience in chemical manufacturing, and experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Travel:May involve occasional 10% travel to domestic equipment suppliers and 3rd party system integrators.
WORKING AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:Work is performed in both an interior/office work environment and all manufacturing and administrative facilities and may involve potential exposure to chemicals, hazardous material and wastes, fumes, unpleasant odors and physical risks, which require following safety precautions and training.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of objects, which may weigh up to 50 pounds. May stand or walk for more than 4 hours per day.
