Summary The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located within the Office of Education and Experience in the Division of Public History, National Museum of American History (NMAH), Smithsonian Institution (SI). Responsibilities The primary purpose of the position is to create a lively, interactive, and coherent interpretive museum environment for visitors that enables the Museum to attain and document its strategic, interpretive, and audience development objectives and to lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of museum experience projects. In this position, you will: Lead the vision and strategy for the overall Museum experience for visitors. Ensure programs are designed with measurable outcomes that support the Museum’s strategic and interpretive plans. Direct the development, implementation, and evaluation of daily public programming and lead staff, interns, volunteers, and contractors to ensure all projects and related work are consistent with the museum’s strategic plan, interpretive plan, and accessibility standards. Set clear goals and objectives for all areas of the Experience Development programs/projects and report outcomes through evaluation of all programs/projects. Ensure programs and projects engage target audiences and accomplish learning goals. Use evaluation data to improve, expand, or end programs/projects. Work closely with NMAH educators, curatorial colleagues, and other relevant stakeholders to develop and implement accessible, inclusive, and relevant interpretive experiences for visitors to the Mall Museum that are based on the collections and work of the Museum. Direct the collection, analysis, and distribution of NMAH visitor experience evaluation data across the Public History Division and collaborate with the Visitor, Volunteer, Intern, and Business Engagement; and Digital Access and Archives departments to manage, analyze and communicate internally collected audience data. Requirements Conditions of Employment Requires career/career-conditional status or eligibility. Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered with Selective Service. Qualifications Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as experience in leading simultaneous project teams to develop engaging visitor experience programs related to American history and/or cultural understanding for large and diverse audiences; experience managing staff and volunteers to meet visitor experience goals; experience in tracking, measuring, and communicating the impacts of visitor experience programs/products. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week. Education There is no education requirement for this grade. Additional Information This position is not included in the bargaining unit.
