MISSION:

DEFINITION:
Drives an ambulance to transport patients to and from County and non-County hospitals and institutions on emergency and non-emergency calls.
Drives an ambulance in compliance with State and local traffic laws and ordinances and County policies and procedures to transport ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients, wheelchair patients and stretcher patients who may be either acute or non-acute to and from their homes and County or non-County health care facilities.
Responsible for the safe transportation of the patients and ambulance crew.
Determines the ambulance speed and emergency driving conditions for transporting acute stretcher patients.
Lifts and transfers patients between beds and stretchers or height-adjustable ambulance cots equipped with wheels.
Carries patients in stretchers and wheels patients in stretchers or wheelchairs.
Lifts patients into and out of an ambulance and positions them securely in the ambulance.
Notifies Ambulance Dispatcher by telephone or radio of traffic accident involving ambulance or any other emergency requiring a change in the route or trip plan such as need for transporting a patient directly to a County hospital or the nearest emergency hospital.
Reports any traffic accidents in accordance with California State Motor Vehicle Code and completes required accident reports.
Stops ambulance and assists Ambulance Medical Technician in restraining patients who become irrational or violent.
While en route, stops at scene of accident or other emergency and provides emergency care, if necessary.
Completes Driver's Daily Trip Report including entries of information about ambulance servicing and patients transported. This includes patient's name and address, departure and return times, mileage, and any unusual circumstances or services performed such as the use of siren or oxygen.
Reports any accompanying medial or non-medical personnel.
Operates radio equipment to maintain constant communication capability.
Inspects ambulance and reports necessary repairs; checks and adds gasoline, diesel fuel, oil, transmission fluid, coolant, and wiper fluid.
Perform duties of Ambulance Medical Technician on an emergency relief basis.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Two (2) years of experience with an ambulance service of which one (1) year must have been in the capacity of an ambulance driver.
LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License* is required.
A California Class B Driver license may be required at a later date. This license is required when more than nine persons are in the vehicle.
* Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record form the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicants's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.
CERTIFICATION:
A current valid California Ambulance Driver Certificate including a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate, and a valid California Emergency Medical Technician Certificate.
A valid California Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Certificate or a valid California Paramedic license may be submitted in lieu of the California Emergency Technician Certificate.

The required license/certificate(s) must be current and unrestricted; conditional, provisional, or restricted license/certificate(s) will NOT be accepted.
PHYSICAL CLASS IV - Arduous:
Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION:
* Additional credit will be given to applicants who possess relevant experience in excess of the Minimum Requirements.
EXAMINATION CONTENT:
This examination will consist of an evaluation of training, experience and desirable qualifications based on application information weighted 100%.
Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on this examination in order to be added to the eligible register.
ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis, and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.
The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the eligible register and will appear in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility.
NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.
SPECIAL INFORMATION:
Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
