Job Description
The Assistant Controller will support the financial operations of the company, with a specific focus on managing the accounting and financial reporting for large construction projects. This role requires a hands-on leader with advanced knowledge of construction accounting, project costing, contract management, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate will be highly skilled at overseeing project budgets, tracking financial performance, ensuring compliance, and providing insights to help guide decision-making for high-value, complex projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & Analysis:
Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for construction projects.Analyze project performance, including budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis, to ensure that large projects are delivered within budget and on time.Provide insights on cost control and revenue recognition for multiple projects simultaneously.
Project Costing & Budgeting:
Oversee the tracking of job costs, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs, to ensure accuracy and compliance with project budgets.Develop and monitor project budgets, ensuring alignment with cost and revenue projections.Collaborate with project managers and senior leadership to ensure financial data is accurately reflected in project forecasts and cost-to-complete reports.
Cash Flow & Job Cost Management:
Manage cash flow for construction projects by overseeing billings, change orders, and collections.Review and approve progress billings and invoices, ensuring alignment with contract terms and progress on-site.Ensure proper job cost allocation and timely recording of financial transactions.
Internal Controls & Compliance:
Maintain compliance with internal controls, GAAP, and relevant construction industry accounting standards.Assist with audits (internal and external) by preparing necessary financial data and documentation for review.Ensure proper documentation and record-keeping for all contracts, change orders, purchase orders, and subcontractor agreements.
Team Leadership & Development:
Provide mentorship and guidance to junior accounting staff and collaborate with the accounting team to ensure smooth financial operations across multiple projects.Assist with training staff on accounting software, processes, and best practices.
Stakeholder Collaboration:
Work closely with project managers, senior executives, and other stakeholders to ensure financial decisions align with business objectives.Provide clear and actionable financial insights to senior leadership to support strategic decision-making.

The Successful Applicant
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. CPA or CMA preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in accounting or finance, with at least 5 years working in the construction industry, managing large and complex construction projects.Strong knowledge of construction accounting principles, including project-based accounting, job costing, and progress billing.Experience working with large-scale projects (e.g., $10M+) and the unique financial challenges they present.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in accounting software, ERP systems (e.g., Procore, Viewpoint, Sage 300), and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel (advanced level).Knowledge of construction contracts, AIA billing forms, and change order management.
Skills & Abilities:
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across departments.Ability to explain complex financial data to non-financial stakeholders.High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
