JOB DESCRIPTION
The Director and Chief Curator will be an engaged and visionary leader with significant museum experience to provide strategic and collaborative leadership for the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston School of the Arts. The Director and Chief Curator is responsible for shaping the Institute’s mission and profile. This position is the Chief Curator of the Institute and leads the efforts to present all exhibitions and programs in a successful and professional manner. The Director and Chief Curator has primary responsibility for all aspects of the Institute’s operation and management, including fiscal and personnel management, as well as for raising funds to support the Institute.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
25% of Time: Operations and PlanningOversee day-to-day operations. Develops and manages the Institute’s operating budget. Supervises Institute employees and determines staffing. Leads visioning, long-term, and strategic planning to accomplish the Institute’s mission. Works closely with the Institute Advisory Board to advance the Institute’s goals.
25% of Time: CuratorialFosters the institutional vision and artistic direction for the Institute. Leads exhibition development with Director of Exhibitions from concept to implementation and collaborates with Institute staff on related programming and publications. Maintains and furthers development of wide network of contemporary artists and curators. Takes the lead in communicating the Institute’s role as an outstanding visual arts institution, and enhancing its reputation and affiliations as a public art museum regionally and nationally.
25% of Time: Fundraising and External SupportServes as the primary ambassador for the Institute. Provides leadership and collaborates with Institute Director of Development and College of Charleston Foundation to identify, engage, cultivate, solicit and steward donors to build a philanthropic base of support for the Institute. Assists Director of Development in identifying and securing appropriate grants and other external funding sources.
15% of Time: Academic CollaborationSupports and develops the Institute’s critical role as a teaching resource for the College of Charleston community. Supports Institute staff and College faculty in the development of opportunities to enhance teaching and learning via the Institute’s exhibitions and programming. Works collaboratively with the School of the Arts Dean to establish a shared vision between the College and the Institute.
10% of Time: External CollaborationDevelops partnerships with peer institutions. Cultivates local, regional, and national connections with scholars, museum colleagues, and other organizations to promote greater visibility for the Institute and College of Charleston. Engages in the regional arts community.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum RequirementsUndergraduate Degree in Art History, Arts Management, Museum Studies, or Studio Art. Advanced degree preferred. Five years of senior curatorial and administrative experience in a museum or gallery managing and curating contemporary art exhibitions. Professional experience in higher education or non-profit environment preferred. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.
Required Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesBackground in Art History, Arts Management, Museum Studies, or Studio Art. Extensive experience with exhibition planning, design, and installation, with an emphasis on contemporary art. Demonstrated knowledge of standards and best practices for art museums and galleries. Record of success in donor relations, fundraising, and grant writing. Demonstrated knowledge of professional colleagues in the museum field.
