President and CEO
Monterey College of Law (“MCL”), a not-for-profit, California Accredited Law School (“CALS”) founded in 1972, seeks a new President and CEO (the “President”) following the announced July 2025 retirement of its current president after 20 years of exemplary service.
MCL provides a robust alternative model to traditional legal education, offering a high-quality legal education in a part-time evening program at a reasonable cost for working adults. MCL continues to expand access to legal services and justice by providing affordable, high-quality, community-based legal education at four California campuses located in Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Bakersfield, and Santa Rosa. MCL also offers one of the first California-accredited online hybrid JD programs.
In 2015, MCL began a strategy of regional expansion by extending its academic programs from Monterey to additional California communities. MCL provides comprehensive free and low-cost legal services through its Community Justice Center and offers training in alternative dispute resolution through the Mandell Gisnet Center for Conflict Management.
With approximately 140 part-time faculty members, MCL provides instruction to about 250 students in small classes. Students are supported by a campus dean and administrator at each location, with additional support from a central administrative team. The President is part of a three-member executive team, along with the Chief Academic Officer and CFO/COO.
MCL intends to be an “opportunity law school” that reflects the demographics of the communities it serves. With an operating budget of approximately $5,000,000 and a guaranteed tuition plan, MCL is dedicated to making legal education accessible to all. MCL has been recognized as a Candidate for Accreditation by WSCUC, which would enable its students to be eligible for federal student loans.
Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the President serves as chief executive officer of MCL, managing all operational, academic, and financial matters. The new President will have the opportunity to advance MCL’s interests externally and improve its infrastructure. The President will lead strategic planning that responds to future challenges for legal education.
Qualifications:
A JD degree is strongly preferred, but not required. Candidates must embrace MCL’s commitment to teaching excellence and community service. A transferable leadership record and relevant administrative experience are essential. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to manage strategically, cultivate relationships, strengthen financial sustainability, and facilitate program innovation. Fundraising aptitude and familiarity with WSCUC or other accreditation protocols would be advantageous. Compensation is targeted at $200,000, with excellent employee benefits and generous flex and vacation time.
