Monterey College of Law

Monterey, CA

President and CEO

Monterey College of Law (“MCL”), a not-for-profit, California Accredited Law School (“CALS”) founded in 1972, seeks a new President and CEO (the “President”), following the announced July 2025 retirement of its current president after 20 years of exemplary service.

MCL provides a robust alternative model to traditional legal education, offering a high-quality legal education in a part-time evening program at a reasonable cost for working adults. MCL continues to expand access to legal services and justice through its four campuses located in Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Bakersfield, and Santa Rosa, as well as a hybrid online JD program.

With approximately 140 part-time faculty members, MCL provides instruction to approximately 250 students in small classes. The President is part of a three-member executive team, along with the Chief Academic Officer and CFO/COO. MCL graduates approximately 30 students each year across all campuses.

MCL intends to be an “opportunity law school” that reflects the demographics of the communities it serves. With an operating budget of approximately $5,000,000, MCL offers a “guaranteed tuition plan” and is currently pursuing accreditation by WSCUC.

Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the President serves as chief executive officer of MCL, managing all operational, academic, and financial matters. Direct reports include the Chief Academic Officer, the Chief Financial and Operating Officer, and the Chief Development Officer. The new President will lead strategic planning, advance community relationships, and improve the infrastructure that supports MCL.

Qualifications:

A JD degree is strongly preferred, but not required. Candidates must embrace MCL’s commitment to teaching excellence and community service. A transferable leadership record and relevant administrative experience are essential. Candidates should demonstrate strategic management abilities, financial sustainability, program innovation, and fundraising aptitude. Familiarity with WSCUC or other accreditation protocols would be advantageous. Compensation will be commensurate with MCL’s budget, with a targeted salary of $200,000.

Search committee review of candidate materials will begin immediately and continue until the appointment. Priority will be granted to applications received prior to Friday, January 31, 2025. A complete application will include a letter of interest, a curriculum vitae or resumé, and contact information for five professional references. MCL encourages applications from candidates whose leadership and personal experience will enrich the diversity of faculty and staff.

Expressions of interest, applications, nominations, and inquiries should be directed to MCL’s search consultant, Mr. Chuck O’Boyle of C. V. O’Boyle, Jr., LLC, at
