Job Summary:
The Materials Manager is responsible for overseeing and controlling the movement, storage, and organization of materials within the warehouse, ensuring efficient workflows that support timely order fulfillment and inventory accuracy. This role involves managing a team of warehouse staff, implementing effective material handling practices, and optimizing warehouse layouts to enhance efficiency and reduce material handling costs.
Key Responsibilities:
Warehouse Organization and Layout: Design and maintain an optimal warehouse layout that controls material movement, efficiently drives an adequate picking time, and supports effective storage arrangements. Conducts regular reviews and reorganization of storage locations for optimal access and safety.
Material Flow Control: Ensure seamless movement of materials through all stages of storage, picking, packing, and shipping. Monitor workflows to eliminate bottlenecks and improve efficiency in material handling.
Receiving and Put away: Oversee the receiving process to ensure that all incoming materials are inspected, documented, and stored correctly in designated areas. Implement put away strategies that minimize handling and improve accessibility.
Process Optimization: Implement best practices for material handling, including FIFO (First In, First Out) and lean warehousing techniques, to reduce movement and handling time. Continuously assess and improve workflow processes to support productivity.
Team Leadership and Training: Lead, train, and mentor warehouse staff in material handling practices and efficient workflow techniques. Establish clear expectations and provide ongoing coaching to ensure high performance and accountability.
Safety and Compliance: Enforce warehouse safety standards and conduct routine safety checks to ensure a secure environment. Ensure compliance with company safety guidelines.
Data and Reporting: Use warehouse management systems (WMS) and inventory tracking software to monitor material movement, generate reports on warehouse activity, and provide insights into areas for improvement.
Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
Experience: 5+ years of experience preferred but not necessary in warehouse or materials management, with a focus on material handling and movement within a warehouse environment; experience with hydraulic or industrial hose materials is a plus.
Technical Skills: Proficiency with warehouse management systems (WMS) and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel. Familiarity with barcode and scanning technologies.
Organizational Abilities: Strong organizational skills with the ability to design and maintain effective warehouse layouts and material flow processes.
Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead, train, and manage a warehouse team in high-volume environments.
Problem-Solving Abilities: Capable of troubleshooting material handling issues, equipment failures, and workflow disruptions effectively and efficiently.
