Position Summary
The Director of Research Administration at the Semel Institute manages a team of approximately 18 direct and indirect reports. The Director is responsible for ensuring proper training and functionality for the support structure of the Institute's research operations and research personnel. Oversight includes both Pre-award and Post-award activities, with proposal development and submission upwards to $600M in requested grant dollars and post-award management of upwards to $170M yearly. The Director also oversees an annual operating budget of more than $2M for these functional areas. Responsibilities include daily oversight, long-term planning, and management of the Semel Institute's Office of Research Administration. This role ensures training and development of the research administration team and collaborates with other Semel Central Offices to develop training resources for Division/Center Administrators. The Director interacts and collaborates with Semel leadership, faculty, department administrators, collaborating departments, and the UCLA Office of Research Administration (ORA), including the Office of Contracts and Grants (OCGA) and Extramural Fund Management (EFM). Additionally, the Director provides consultation to PIs and administrators across areas of Research Administration, University, and sponsor policy. Furthermore, the Director is responsible for recruiting and managing highly effective staff, serves as a key stakeholder in leadership meetings, and collaborates in the design and implementation of tools and systems aimed at improving operations and awarded dollars.

Qualifications
Proven managerial skills to lead and manage a broad-based central office in research fund management utilizing industry best practices and procedures. (Required) Experience in effectively supervising management and professional staff, including skills in recruiting, hiring, training, and evaluating job performance. (Required) Superior service orientation, exceptional organizational and leadership skills, creative problem-solving, decision-making, and planning skills. (Required) Expert skill in research finance and accounting, including advanced concepts of internal controls to analyze and assess business practices required to manage $1.3 billion in annual expenditures. (Required) Highly refined skills in directing groups of people and teams to achieve a common goal, delegating responsibility with clear expectations of results. (Required) Demonstrated senior leadership skills in developing and implementing strategic plans to advance the effectiveness of the unit. (Required) Demonstrated competence in performance management, staff development, mentoring, conflict management, and employee engagement. (Required) Advanced skill and experience in analyzing data for monitoring and measuring performance and translating the results into executive management reports. (Required) Solid understanding of research enterprise databases; proficiency with the most current version of applications in the Microsoft Office Suite. (Required) Exceptional skill to develop and deliver training curriculum on complex and technical research finance issues for a diverse audience. (Required) Strong and effective verbal and written communication skills. (Required)
Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
Bachelor's Degree preferred with generally 15 or more years of experience in research finance/accounting or a related field with directly transferable skills/knowledge. (Preferred)
