Department Summary
The Director of Research Administration (DRA) is responsible for the oversight and direction of pre-and post-award management, compliance, budgeting, and evaluation of research programs and processes in the School of Dentistry (SOD). Incumbent establishes the direction, goals, implementation strategy and policies of the SOD within the SOD Research Office. Incumbent serves as the SOD's organization expert for policies and procedures relating to the issues and concerns of sponsored projects. The DRA provides leadership, training, daily management, planning coordination and supervision of four (4) full-time research administrators, one (1) part-time analyst and a work-student in the SOD Research Office in support of the school's strategic plan to promote and grow sponsor-funded programs and research. The DRA develops and implements internal controls that foster quality source documentation for audit reviews and/or internal evaluation to ensure compliance with sponsor and regulatory authorities and UC/UCLA/SOD policies. DRA employs wide-ranging, in-depth, knowledge and experience in research administration to advise SOD executive leadership in strategic and tactical planning in the pursuit of extramural funds and provides expert consultation in the highly complex regulatory and business operations of sponsored funding to SOD senior leadership, department heads, faculty, staff, and campus constituents, as well as external partners. The DRA is expected to provide analysis and interpretation of federal, state, and university policies and procedures; oversight of specialized research administrative functions; process development to ensure consistency and compliance in the management of all sponsored funds across the school; financial management and reporting; development and delivery of training workshops and meetings; and deployment of staff resources, including the establishment of a training manual to ensure efficiency, effectiveness, and quality control.

Qualifications
Expert knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local regulations, non-profit sponsor policies, Federal flow-through award terms, UCLA Accounting Policies and Procedures and generally accepted accounting principles, campus and system-wide policies and procedures, and terminology pertaining to extramural research in the context of a large institution of higher education with a teaching hospital. (Required) Substantial skill in: a) leading by example, modeling a collaborative culture which values ethical conduct, customer service, b) supporting an environment that respects the person, leverages the power and synergy of teams with members with disparate opinions and views to achieve effective decision-making, c) acknowledging achievement, partnering with others to incorporate their ideas, and adapting to change, and d) facilitating consensus-building in diverse work groups with many perspectives by exercising diplomacy, negotiating compromise, and maintaining confidentiality. (Required) Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal skills to compose and deliver concise communications to explain advanced research administration concepts and procedures to individuals at various knowledge levels effectively and professionally to all levels of faculty, staff, and non-University entities. (Required) Develop and maintain positive and effective interactions, demonstrating respect for the views of others; treat others with dignity and foster the values of diversity and inclusion. (Required) Demonstrated knowledge and skill in performing accounting functions and financial management, including budget preparation for contracts and grants and clinical trials, financial controls, audits and problem solving. Including preparing clear and comprehensive financial reports for use by Principal Investigators, granting agencies and the SOD leadership. (Required) Demonstrated in-depth experience and expertise in delivering high quality customer service to a diverse group of colleagues within the organization, in the campus research community, and in sponsor entities with a particular focus on: customer needs, negotiating mutually beneficial workflow and communications to achieve a common goal, establishing service expectations, and delivering accurate and complete services. (Required) As a recognized expert with advanced training skills, effectively deliver on-going training in a broad range of complex topics in the research administration field to the SOD community and research administration staff to enhance skills and provide guidance in successfully navigating processes, procedures, and policies. (Required) Exceptional knowledge of UCLA policies, procedures, systems, institutional regulatory certifications and where to find required information, including knowledge of University and funding agency policies and procedures on grant submissions and grant administration with the ability to retrieve and analyze on-line financial information and computer generated reports. (Required) Expert skill to analyze existing policy and procedure to offer substantive recommendations for improved efficiencies in office-wide operations and improve overall service to the campus research community. (Required) Exceptional supervisory skills to delegate appropriately and ensure completion of tasks, organize workflow, perform hiring and training functions and conduct performance evaluation. (Required) Demonstrated in-depth experience and expertise to set long range plans and short-term goals for the research administration unit and develop action plans and implement schedules to achieve the plans and goals. (Required)
