POSITION SUMMARY

:

Under the direction of the VP of Communications, the Senior Director of Strategic Communications plans and oversees the implementation of comprehensive, integrated communications strategy and tactics to support BMCHS’s long-term goals, including but not limited to modeling a transformational kind of excellence in healthcare where clinical and operational innovation meets health equity and access. The Senior Director of Strategic Communications works closely with BMCHS strategy, marketing, development, community relations, and government advocacy teams to analyze market trends, set communications objectives, design communication strategy and measure the effectiveness of various communications campaigns. The Senior Director of Strategic Communications will lead the external communications and content strategy teams to advance compelling and goal-shifting engagement with priority external audiences including media, patients, policymakers, health care key opinion leaders, and constituency groups.

The Senior Director of Strategic Communications will lead and support high profile BMCHS business and issues.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Stays abreast of national, health, and local trends as well as BMCHS’s considerations to connect data points and drive reputation strategy and strategic communications planning

Drives a cohesive narrative connecting BMCHS value propositions with external factors and Marketing & Communications team objectives

Develops strategic, pro-active communications plans around high-profile BMCHS business transformation and innovation initiatives

In partnership with Community Relations and External Affairs and Government Affairs teams, identify opportunities for senior leaders and key clinical staff to enhance relationships with important community partners (e.g. business, government, civic/social service organizations); represent BMCHS across communication workstreams with key advocacy organizations

Collaborates with administrative, functional, and clinical leadership to manage reputational threats and crisis situations and serve as organizational spokesperson

Serves as trusted communications advisor to strategy, development, community relations, and government advocacy colleagues

Reviews and guides promotional activity including amplification of key research, speaking events, content for external blogs, and regular media relations activities

Supervises, mentors, and guides External Communications and Content Strategy teams

Partners regularly and collaborates with BUSM on key, shared initiatives

Manage budget and agency resources for the external communications department

Must adhere to all BMCHS principles of RESPECT

Leads health equity thought leadership initiatives to elevate BMCHS’s profile across national audiences

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s Degree required, Advanced Degree preferred

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

None

EXPERIENCE:

Requires a minimum of ten years of related communications strategy experience. At least five years of executive engagement and management of a team is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSA):

Strategic mindset, highly organized and excellent stakeholder management ability

Works well with ambiguity and has the ability to connect points of information to drive communication strategy

Collaborative and calm under pressure

Proven ability to translate a corporate strategic plan into values-consistent, compelling and propelling communications strategy and engagement

Ability to translate complex research and technical topics into compelling communications

Experience managing and mentoring staff

Capable of program development, implementations and evaluation

Excellent verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills

Must be highly organized to manage multiple priorities

Dedicated team player with the willingness and desire to learn and grow within the organization

Proficient in standard client software in a healthcare office setting (i.e., MS Word, Excel, Access, Web Browsers, etc.)
