The Certified School Nurse (CSN) identifies and treats health conditions among students in the school setting. The CSN provides instruction for the student's general wellbeing and disease prevention. The Certified School Nurse must assess the student's physical condition in the school setting and refer the student to appropriate resources as needed to be successful in school.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Participates in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting plans by including assessment planning, health history or medical review for the studentPromotes healthy practices and nursing services to the students so they will be successful in general education classesCoordinates services with other special services personnel within the school to support studentsCommunicates with school administrators, teachers and other staff members about students with specific health problems adhering to HIPAA and federal lawsFollows the school's district policies for health, emergency care, accidents, drug abuse and bullyingNotifies school Administers, local health department, parents and staff about confirmed communicable diseases within the schoolWrites student's IEP goals related to student's health condition that is impacting student's learningCompletes and files school and state reports regarding screenings, immunizations, physicals, etc.Charts pertinent information on student's health fileMonitors compliance of school health program with federal, state and local laws, regulations and policies as applicablePrepares health reports for supervisor, board of education and the health departmentProvides first aid care and medically prescribed servicesMaintains security of school health supplies and medicationsInstructs students in health education according to the state curriculumServes as a resource person on health issuesProvides staff development on health-related topics for school staff and volunteersScreens and conducts health appraisals for students and staffProvides follow-up evaluations on students as requiredRecommends corrective action where problems are identifiedCorresponds with parents on health needs of childrenIdentifies abnormal growth and development, symptoms of disease and discuss with parentsAbility to coordinate and facilitate services between the school, local health agency, and other community resourcesAbility to develop positive working relationships
Minimum Requirements:
Current nursing license for the state in which the nurse practicesCertification or Credential in school nursing, requiredOne year prior school nursing experience requiredPediatric experience, preferredComplies with all relevant professional standards of practiceParticipation and completion of Amegis' Competency program when applicableCurrent CPR if applicableTB Questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicableCurrent Health certificate (per contract or state regulation)Must meet all federal, state and local requirementsSuccessful completion of new hire training as applicable to job siteUnderstand patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirementsAbility to effectively elicit/provide information to and from appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors, co-workers, clients) via strong communication skills; proficiency in the English language is requiredComputer proficiency requiredMust be at least 18 years of age
