ASML Germany GmbH
Senior Researcher: Optical Research Project Architect
ASML Germany GmbH, Wilton, Iowa, United States, 52778
Introduction to the jobASML US brings together the most creative minds in science and technology to develop lithography machines that are key to producing faster, cheaper, more energy-efficient microchips. We design, develop, integrate, market and service these advanced machines, which enable our customers - the world’s leading chipmakers - to reduce the size and increase the functionality of their microchips, which in turn leads to smaller, more powerful consumer electronics. Our headquarters are in Veldhoven, the Netherlands, and we have 18 office locations around the United States including main offices in Chandler, Arizona, San Jose and San Diego, California, Wilton, Connecticut, and Hillsboro, Oregon. The Senior Researcher drives technical analysis on the latest customer technology. Understands, anticipates, develops and provides context for lithography advancements in order to provide insights to ASML technology roadmap. Performs feasibility studies, supports the development of product road maps and advises on future product and technology definitions. Contributes to the design and construction of new tools, methods, procedures and processes in the lab. Makes sure that instructions and safety measures are in place.Role and responsibilitiesIdentifies gaps in lithography solutions and technology roadmaps. Demonstrates technology solutions through feasibility studies and proof of concepts to extend ASML's roadmaps. Supports the development of technology solutions where applicable in the lab. Leads (plays a principal or guiding role in) the development of new technology competences, creation of inventions, transfer of results to development operation after building proof of concept. Understands and contributes (is partly instrumental or responsible for) to the creation of the vision and business/value proposition of the research topic.Key components of this position are:Technically leads a (multidisciplinary) project, work package or technical competence on function level (FC) or comparable level of complexity. Creates technical budgets and definitions.Using Physics, Mathematics, Electronics, Mechanics, and Software knowledge and an understanding of the sensor system as well as its function in the lithography tool or metrology tool to model, design and debug new and existing sensors in complex evolving environments.Shapes new technology by defining critical problems and proposing solutions paths for new problems at ASML requiring technology and/or competences unknown inside ASML but known outside of ASML.Manages technical uncertainties at function level (FC) or comparable level of complexity. Most technical components have a considerable level of uncertainty.Independently realizes cross disciplinary Research (in relation to adjacent areas and disciplines) at function level (FC) or comparable level of complexity. Performs feasibility studies, supports the development of product road maps and advises on future product and technology definitions. Determines the work via clearly scoped work packages driven by a technical risk assessment.Ensures that the competence level is maintained and improved leading into Invention Disclosures.Responsible for organizing and maintaining academic collaborations related to competence development.Education and experienceMaster or PhD degree in Optics, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or other Engineering Discipline, with an emphasis on a subset of the following: optical systems, photonics, lasers, integrated optics, optical simulation, or equivalent experience.PhD Degree– 5 years, will consider post-doctoral research toward experienceMaster Degree – 8 years experiencePhD research work related to optics, optical systems, physics, optical modeling and/or integrated optics.Hands on Optical system assembly, optical alignment, testing and qualification. Breadboard setups and experiment design and analysis experience.Expertise with design, optical tolerancing and modeling.Working knowledge with diverse optical devices and sensors: objectives, collimation and relay optics, fibers, cameras and detectors.Teamwork:The candidate must have the capacity to work alongside engineers, leaders and technicians to execute activities related to complex tests, hardware related simulations and designs and builds including testing and data gathering. Effective communication of findings, ideas and results to peers and managers.Autonomously interacts with (advises, challenges, educates) Senior Researchers, Research Portfolio Managers and Management. Next to that interacts with entities outside of Research e.g. System Engineering, (strategic) Sourcing, Intellectual Property and D&E Function or Competence owners.Problem Solving:The candidate must have expertise in troubleshooting complex problems on complex systems. Develop and debug algorithms and software in Labview and MATLAB.Identifies and understands problems related to the task. Looks at the problems from different (multidisciplinary) angles and proposes several (out-of-the-box) solutions. Drives the proposed solutions or approaches into results. Does this proactively on function level (FC) or comparable level of complexity.Communication:The candidate must have the capability to clearly communicate progress and status of ongoing investigations to managers and to customers; Candidate will be required to write reports documenting investigations carried out.Willing to speak up and challenge project leadership appropriately.Environment:Operates in a changing environment where processes and ways of working require adaptation to enable effective and efficient innovation.Impact:Leads the development of Research solutions. Has impact on the work of several colleagues, by being a technical/content lead, or by being a mentor/coach towards juniors.SkillsDesired technical skills in the candidate are:Optical modeling and data analysis and evaluation.Wave propagation and diffraction modeling.Polarization optics and polarization modeling.Image processing and pattern recognition.Optical and physics Simulation in Matlab and other suitable languages and design tools.Data processing and visualization with Matlab.Building and aligning complex sensors using techniques like collimation and interferometry.Test stand design and build: concept, error budget, realization.Working at the cutting edge of tech, you’ll always have new challenges and new problems to solve
