Job Description

The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.ResponsibilitiesPerform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data and decontamination.Update patient information and ensure the accurate collection and storage of specimens according to established procedures.Properly explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collections in a clear and courteous manner.Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.Fully understand all physicians' orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the test order.Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.Package specimens for transport and store them according to required temperatures.Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label them, and follow specific procedures to maintain the integrity of the specimens during transport.Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.Attend annual department trainings and answer telephone calls, reading laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.Essential SkillsValid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment.Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.High School Diploma or GED.0-2 years of experience.Additional Skills & QualificationsStrong customer service skills.Experience with pediatric and geriatric patients.Good hygiene and appearance, preferably with clean-cut fingernails.Knowledge of using laboratory equipment such as centrifuges.Ability to perform 60-90 draws daily, averaging 15-20 draws per person.Work Environment

The work environment is within a Patient Service Center (PSC) located in DCH Hospital. The working hours are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday, with bi-weekly shifts on Saturdays from 7:00 am to 11:00 am. The role involves working in a team of 2 full-time and 2 part-time staff members. The worker is not expected to stand for the majority of the shift and will have chairs available in the processing area. Training for the role consists of 3-4 days, mostly focused on administrative tasks.About Actalent
