Senior Director (RN) – Dartmouth Cancer Center

Under the direction of the Vice President for Ambulatory Nursing and the System Vice President, Oncology Services, assume responsibility for the development, management, and outcomes for systems and programs which support nursing and patient care including, but not limited to, nursing policies and procedures, nursing education, professional development, and shared governance. Serves as a role model, mentor and resource to Dartmouth (DCC) nursing across the oncology service line. Direct areas of responsibility include nursing across the DCC service line, including locations in Lebanon, Manchester, Nashua, NH, and St. Johnsbury, VT. Areas of responsibility include:

Oncology infusion suite operations

Radiation Oncology nursing

Research nursing

Nurse navigation

Clinic, triage nursing

Works in triad partnership with physician and administrative leadership to carry out clinical, quality and safety operational responsibilities related to nursing practice. Develops nursing strategic, operating, and capital plans and annual budgets for the service line. Participates in setting and validating annual goals and budgets for the cancer service line at all system sites. The Senior Director, DCC Nursing will have a direct reporting relationship to the Vice President of Ambulatory Nursing, and a strong dotted line to the System Vice President, Oncology Services, to execute on key cancer center nursing strategies, policies and procedures, standardization of practice across all sites to the extent possible, and as the senior nursing leader for the cancer center, set the highest standard for nursing personnel across the service line. A key priority is advancing a positive organizational climate and employee engagement which promotes a high level of effectiveness within the service line through defined expectations, clear directions, and transparent communication. Convey a high level of integrity and foster the overall spirit of cooperation, trust, and respect in Dartmouth Cancer Center across the service line.

Responsibilities

Provides direction and leadership for nursing systems and programs throughout the Dartmouth Cancer Center (DCC) service line. Areas of responsibility include the nursing groups in Lebanon, Manchester, Nashua, NH and St. Johnsbury, VT. Works with clinical and operational leadership to establish appropriate standards of practice/care and outcome measures related to nursing practice and patient care. Develops and coordinates programs within DCC and the Center for Nursing Excellence to meet regulatory, compliance, and organizational standards and expectations.

Advances the oncology service line concept and ensure that the financial, operational nursing standards and practice is maintained, and that high standards of quality, safety, and nursing operations are defined, standardized, and achieved.

Assists in developing and maintaining high standards of nursing quality and financial performance across all DCC locations.

Manages and oversees DCC nursing operational managers and leaders within the spectrum of the Center for Nursing Excellence and areas across the DCC service line, including locations in Lebanon, Manchester, Nashua, NH, and St. Johnsbury, VT.

Leads strategic development for patient care delivery.

Directs the development and implementation of annual operating and capital budgets for direct cost centers. Assists in the development of internal and external projections and budget assumptions for non-direct cost centers.

Serves as DCC nursing leadership representative to Hospital, Staff Board of Governors, DH, community, and State and/or regional committees as needed or required.

Promotes collaboration and engagement across research, teaching, and clinical missions of DCC and DH.

Using advanced critical thinking and clinical experience, facilitates a multidisciplinary approach to problem identification and resolution with other stakeholder departments/sections at DH to improve the nursing care within clinical systems.

Applies advanced leadership, analytical, and change management skills to identify and develop new programs or methodologies for delivering the department’s clinical services more effectively and efficiently.

Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in nursing with 5 years of nursing leadership experience and consultative skills required.

Doctoral degree in nursing preferred.

Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and concisely both verbally and in writing with individuals and groups at various levels and various disciplines.

The ability to relate and work effectively with physicians, administrators, support staff, and the general public with a high degree of tact and discretion required.

Greenbelt in process improvement methods or equivalent preferred.

Clinical experience in an acute care setting or equivalent utilizing comprehensive knowledge of care delivery principles for specific populations. Prior experience in an Academic Medical Center and NCI designated Comprehensive Cancer Center preferred.

Ability to travel up to 50% of time. Most travel is within service line and regionally.

Required Licensure/Certifications

Licensed Registered Nurse with NH Eligibility

BLS within 30 days

Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or Certified in Executive Nursing Practice (CENP) Certification through American Organization for Nursing Leadership OR Nurse Executive Certification (NE-BC) or Nurse Executive Advanced Certification (NEA-BC) through American Nurses Credentialing Center within 1 year
