Job DescriptionJOB SUMMARY
Atlas Tube, a division of Zekelman Industries, is seeking a Operations Intern for our facility located in Plymouth, MI. Reporting to the General Manager, the Operations Intern will learn the inner workings of our manufacturing plants. This internship will provide hands-on training across key areas of operations, with the goal of developing skills to one day take on a plant management role. The intern will gain experience in production planning, quality control, shipping, logistics, and mill operations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Mill Operations
Engages with mill operators to understand process improvements and efficiency strategies.
Assists in quality control by preparing checklists, tracking results, and identifying recurring issues.
Attends daily production meetings for insight into operational priorities and interdepartmental coordination.
Supports creation of production logs to document performance and delays.
Observes the bundling process to understand efficiency impacts of non-standard bundles.
Shadows Shipping to gain knowledge of process enhancements.
Production Planning
Collaborates on steel ordering and addresses daily sales coordination challenges.
Supports communication between sales and production for priority orders and scheduling conflicts.
Summarizes rolling reports, noting discrepancies for further investigation.
Assists in organizing slitting orders to align with production timelines.
Quality Assurance
Works with the Quality team to understand customer quality standards, identify issues, and implement corrective actions.
Assists in documenting customer feedback to guide improvement initiatives.
Logistics and Traffic
Observes traffic flow, shipping challenges, and the logistics impact on deliveries.
Gains an overview of load-building techniques for optimized efficiency.
Additional Duties
Assists in monitoring and enforcing safety protocols to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and company safety standards; participates in safety audits, hazard assessments, and incident investigations to promote a secure work environment.
Performs other duties as they might be assigned.
Regular, full-time predictable onsite attendance is an essential function of this role.
REQUIREMENTS
Pursuing a bachelor's degree chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, material science engineering, metallurgy, industrial engineering, or related field
Strong analytical and decision-making skills, with the ability to troubleshoot issues
Effective communication skills for cross-functional collaboration
Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Ability to maintain confidentiality of all aspects of job responsibilities
Ability to travel to Internship Summit, hosted at one of our Zekelman Industries’ locations
