THE COMPANY
89bio is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of innovative therapies for the treatment of liver and cardio-metabolic diseases. The company's lead product candidate, pegozafermin (BIO89-100), is a specifically engineered glycoPEGylated analog of FGF21. Pegozafermin is being developed for the treatment of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and severe hypertriglyceridemia (SHTG).
THE ROLE
Reporting to the Vice President, People and Culture, the Senior Director, Human Resources will be responsible for fostering a dynamic and inclusive workplace culture in alignment with the company’s vision to change the lives of patients with serious liver and cardio-metabolic diseases. This role will oversee talent management, employee relations and HR Operations. The incumbent will be instrumental in shaping and executing HR strategies that attract, retain, and develop top talent while ensuring compliance with industry-specific regulatory requirements and fostering a culture of engagement and continuous improvement.
THE RESPONSIBILITIES
HR Strategy and Leadership:
Partner with the VP People and Culture to develop and implement HR strategies that support the organization’s growth objectives, including workforce planning, employee engagement, talent management and organizational development and effectiveness.
Drive alignment of HR policies and practices with the company’s vision, values, and corporate goals.
Provide leadership and build organizational capability within the HR team, sharing knowledge and information in collaboration with teammates to develop others while managing, mentoring and developing HR team members (to be assigned).
Talent Management and Development:
Design and implement performance management processes that align with organizational goals and ensure consistent evaluation of employee contributions.
Lead initiatives to support employee growth and professional development, including training programs, career pathing, and mentorship.
Employee Relations and Culture:
Foster an inclusive, supportive workplace culture by implementing programs that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Serve as a trusted advisor to employees and managers on HR policies, conflict resolution, and performance issues.
Conduct regular surveys and feedback loops to ensure continuous improvement in employee satisfaction and engagement.
Compensation and Benefits:
Collaborate with the VP, People and Culture and compensation consultant to design competitive compensation structures and benefit programs that meet industry standards.
Ensure effective administration of compensation and benefits conducting annual benefits analysis (with benefits broker), including compliance with legal and regulatory standards.
Collaborate with key cross functional colleagues to ensure appropriate internal controls and relevant internal audits are in place.
Compliance and Risk Management:
Ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations, particularly those unique to the biotech industry (e.g., OSHA, FDA, and other regulatory bodies).
Develop and implement policies and procedures, including maintaining and updating the Employee Handbook, Code of Conduct, and other critical employee related policies to mitigate organizational risk.
HR Metrics and Reporting:
Implement and monitor HR metrics to assess organizational health, drive data-based decisions, and report to senior leadership.
Analyze workforce trends and present insights to guide strategic decisions and improve HR processes by identifying and actioning opportunities for automation, and for manager and employee self-service wherever possible.
Act as the system administrator for HR systems.
THE QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field; a Master’s degree or SPHR/PHR certification is a plus.
10+ years of public company HR experience, with 5-7 years in a leadership role within the biotech, pharmaceutical, or life sciences sectors.
Proven track record of leading HR initiatives that drive growth and engagement in a high-performance, scientific environment.
Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate and manage project stakeholders across multiple levels of the organization.
Strong knowledge of biotech industry regulations and compliance requirements.
Demonstrated ability to lead and develop high-performing HR teams.
Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret HR data and use insights to drive strategic decisions.
Commitment to fostering an inclusive and ethical workplace culture that optimizes candidate and employee experience.
SALARY & LEVEL
89bio considers a range of factors when determining salary and level. The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position in Northern California is $270,000 – $290,000.
