The ideal candidate is an outstanding teacher with a deep understanding of and passion for Technical Theater. He/she enjoys working with students and has experience masterfully guiding them in the development of their artistic skills. The Technical Director is charged with tech directing MS productions, teaching Technical Theater classes, and working closely in collaboration with the US Technical Theater Director, the MS Theater teacher, and the Performing Arts Department Chair to promote and develop the Theatrical Arts at ESD.Essential Functions:As the
MS Technical Theater Director , the successful candidate will fulfill the following:
Teach 2-3 Technical Theater course(s) in the middle school, delivering instruction aligned with ESD’s Mission, Tenets, and Hallmarks.Design and implement technical elements for MS theater productions and showcases yearly, providing support for US productions where appropriate.Work in tandem with the US Technical Theater Director regarding the management and maintenance of theatrical spaces and equipment.Offer significant support for after-school performances or serve an extracurricular capacity as a club advisor or athletic coach.Participate and engage in professional activities and gatherings at team, departmental, divisional, and school-wide levels.
Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.Work closely with colleagues on the school’s curricular initiatives.As a
Division-level Faculty Member , the MS Technical Theater Director fulfills the following division-related responsibilities and activities:Serves as a Middle School advisor.Attends daily chapel with Middle School Advisory.Attends Middle School faculty meetings and supports the middle school division.Represents the performing arts department on various decision-making school committees.Adheres to policies related to boundaries with students.Attends required abuse risk management training.Adheres to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising students.Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.Generally 40% sitting, 40% walking, and 20% standing.Minimal temperature variations (regular exposure to outside temperatures).Off-site travel to include rustic environments and occasional overnight trips.Generally hazard-free environment.Requirements
Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree and experience in theater preferred.3+ years of teaching at the middle school level preferred.Understanding of the design aspects of all areas of technical theater.Extensive knowledge of lighting and sound equipment and theater safety practices.Professional theater experience preferred.Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple ongoing tasks simultaneously.Proficiency in educational technology and twenty-first century pedagogy.Commitment to participate broadly and cheerfully in the life of the school.
