The Smithsonian Campaign for Our Shared Future will secure funds for all Smithsonian museums and centers as the institution reimagines its mission to find solutions for collective challenges in a rapidly changing world. The campaign will provide a foundation for critical research to ensure people and nature thrive together, build unparalleled education programs with families and partners, collect the world’s most precious objects, document the present while reflecting on the past, and reimagine the visitor experience both in-person and online.The National Portrait Gallery was authorized and founded by Congress in 1962 with the mission to acquire and display portraits of "men and women who have made significant contributions to the history, development, and culture of the people of the United States." Today, the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery attracts over 2 million visitors onsite and 4 million online and continues to narrate the multi-faceted and ever-changing story of America through the individuals who have shaped its culture.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Serves as the main contact person within NPG for all education center/Explore! programs, including in-gallery and virtual.Develops short and long-range goals and objectives for NPG education spaces and in-gallery programs and services that are based on current educational theory and best practice.Plans studio programs, fitting programs to audience needs and NPG resources, and drawing on both NPG, SI wide and outside resources.Assists with coordinating and facilitating in-gallery scheduling and tours as needed.Supports the development of informal learning instruction and materials that derive primarily from and refer to the collections of the NPG for intergenerational audiences to maintain the interest and needs of these audiences.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Ability to deal with a variety of people in structured and unstructured situations.Ability to communicate in written form to sufficiently conduct/present museum-related workshops, classroom presentations, multi-media, hands-on, and the performing arts.Knowledge of developmental, recreational and educational needs of museum audiences sufficient for understanding and learning to build community engagement.Knowledge of public museums, collections, studies, and/or exhibits sufficient to develop learning experiences for secondary education art (objects and collections) sufficient to present informal instruction, coaching and support using a museum collection.Education completed outside the United States must be deemed equivalent to higher education programs of U.S. Institutions by an organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials.
