About the camp

Camp Pennyroyal is a traditional overnight summer camp owned and operated by Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana. Located 15 miles south of Owensboro, KY, this 180-acre camp includes an 8-acre lake, three year-round buildings, platform tents, screened cabins, and primitive camping areas. Pennyroyal is a variety of traditional camp activities including canoeing, kayaking, standup paddle boarding as well as archery and a low/ high ropes course. Our program hosts Girl Scouts entering grades 4 through 12 with up to 70 campers per session. Programs are run by paid camp staff and Girl Scout volunteers.

About the role

The Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana is looking for a full-time Aquatics Director will help ensure the ultimate summer camp experience for our campers. The Waterfront Director manages our aquatic program, facilities, and equipment; including sit-a-top kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding, and swimming. The Aquatics Director will train and supervise unit staff in aquatic areas, work with campers, and support needs around camp. Other duties include supporting cookout nights, participating in daily camp life, and more. The Aquatics Director should be responsible, attentive, and fun-loving. The ideal candidate will have previous paddling and lifeguard experience. They will be invested in developing a camp culture that nourishes the health and growth of campers, staff, and volunteers.

Compensation

The salary for the Aquatics Director (Camp Pennyroyal) position is $5,250 for the entire seasonal contract.

Staff training will be held May 27 - June 6, with additional training and set-up time for some staff from May 23 - May 25.

Key Responsibilities



Responsible for overall safety of campers and staff using swimming and boating equipment.



Train and supervise Unit staff in waterfront program areas.



Coach a variety of instructional sessions which include but are not limited to swimming strokes, water safety, and other rescue drills/ safety practice for staff.



Perform routine checks of equipment, facilities, and programs and work with the Camp Director and Site Manager to communicate maintenance needs.



Participate as a member of the Director Team to support others when needed and act as Camp Director when Director and Assistant Director are unavailable.



Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENT



Non-traditional and long work hours are expected.



The Aquatics Director may be asked to sleep in a unit with other staff members separate (but near) campers with restrooms a short walk away.



Daily exposure to various weather conditions, plants, and animals.



Walk/hike several miles daily, at various grades, elevations, and on uneven terrain. Camp Pennyroyal hosts low and high ropes courses.



Daily swimming, boating, and life guarding on Wishing Star Lake.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION



Must be First Aid/CPR Certified



Waterfront Lifeguard certification preferred (but not required prior to start of employment)



Water Safety Instructor certification preferred



Other certifications and outdoor or boating skills/knowledge are a plus

EXPERIENCE



1 year of working in childcare, youth program, or camp.●

1 year of supervisory and administrative experience preferred.●

4 months - 1 year of program development and delivery for adults and children.●

Highly preferred: swim or paddling instruction experience.

21+ years of age



Meet state, federal, and ACA requirements for summer camp employment



Strong communication, written, and public speaking skills



Adaptable and flexible within a fast-paced working environment



Organized and consistent



Provide exemplary customer service

● Able to pull up to an overview of the entire goal and problem solve accordingly

● Comfort and competency while driving automatic trucks and non-motorized boats

● Must have valid driver's license with a safe driving record meeting company standards

● Swimming proficiency and comfort in all types of water conditions
