Carnegie Mellon University is seeking a talented and motivated Software Engineer to join the Vice Provost for Teaching & Learning Innovation (VPTLI) Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) Software Engineering team. The Office of the VPTLI brings pedagogical and technological issues together to support Carnegie Mellon's teaching and learning community. The individual in this position will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining software systems that enhance the university's educational technology ecosystem and related infrastructure. The ideal candidate will also have hands-on experience with AI and machine learning technologies and interests in integrating innovative solutions within an academic environment.
The individual in this position will develop educational technology tools tailored to CMU teaching & learning needs, with a focus on making (new and existing) tools work well within the CMU TEL ecosystem. Major responsibilities of the position include developing and maintaining applications; analyzing, and synthesizing information related to functional specifications, requirements and solution strategies; and developing and maintaining technical documentation.Core responsibilities include:Design, develop, test, and maintain applications, interfaces, or systems programs.Gather, analyze, synthesize, and provide input on functional specifications and requirements; evaluate solution strategies generated by others.Write robust, highly tested, well-crafted code.Develop and maintain technical documentation.Support questions/issues regarding applications and/or systems issues and availability.May perform other related technical support for the unit.The individual in this position will participate in the full lifecycle of application development and collaborate with team members to understand project requirements, to design and implement well-aligned systems, and arrive at a production-ready set of educational technologies.Participate in the entire IT life cycle for technology solutions - including planning, deployment, and ongoing managementDeploy solutions in a secure and highly available manner - whether in the cloud or on-premisesEvolve the application infrastructure to keep it both current and relevant to the needs of the department and the universityEnsure that applications are performant and responsiveDevelop and document best practices and processes related to technology solutions

Minimum qualifications:B.S. in Computer Science, related field, or equivalent in experience1-3 years experienceOr a combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstratedFull Stack experience: React, Angular or similar front-end framework, HTML, CSS, Java, JavaScript, or other languages. Backend knowledge, Node, Java, Ruby on Rails. Familiarity with databases (e.g. MySQL, MongoDB), web servers (e.g. Apache) and UI/UX designDesirable qualifications:Experience with developing AI-enabled tools.Requirements:Successful background checkAdditional Information:Sponsorship:Applicantsfor this positionmustbecurrentlylegallyauthorized to workfor CMUin the United States.
