REPORTS TO: Assistant Controller

STATUS: This is a full-time exempt position that does not pay overtime.

SUMMARY: The Accounting Manager is responsible for maintaining the inventory accounting system, conducting monthly reconciliations, reporting information to leadership teams, preparing monthly journal entries, and implementing process improvement where possible.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Train and manage inventory accounting staff.

Conduct company-wide inventory reconciliation monthly.

Evaluate gains, losses, and throughput from an operational and financial perspective and report results to leadership teams.

Oversee accounting for company barge operations; direct investigation and communication of discrepancies to Barge Division Manager and/or Supply Chain Director.

Oversee accounting for inventory transactions related to various special cases (cost exchange, intercompany foreign-to-domestic transfers, custody of third-party fuel etc.)

Review bulk fuel invoices and associated stock receipts for accuracy; initiate corrections when necessary.

Review/prepare monthly adjusting journal entries pertaining to inventory (gains/losses, throughput allocations, fuel tax corrections, etc.).

Oversee posting of remote convenience store shift entries; reconcile activity with the associated general ledger accounts.

Ensure leases, rebates, and other contract payments that are determined by inventory throughput are prepared and submitted in an accurate and timely manner.

Ensure government mandated reports are accurately prepared and submitted in a timely manner.

Function as the point-of-contact for all inventory and convenience store accounting system inquiries.

Contribute to improving processes and document presentation where necessary.

Assist inventory related tax preparation/reconciliation.

Assist with bank account reconciliation.

Assist with preparing and supporting the annual financial audit.

Other duties as assigned by Controller/ Assistant Controller.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Requires thorough understanding of Microsoft Office Suite programs.

Prefer applicant with knowledge of Sage - Fixed Assets or F9 Financial Reporting application.

Must have excellent communication skills and be effective in oral and written communication.

Experience in preparing and conducting internal audits.

The ability to work independently with minimal oversight to complete assigned duties by target deadlines.

Requires knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelors degree in accounting, finance, or business administration.

Minimum of 3-5 years related experience in an accounting or finance environment, prefer audit/process evaluation experience.

Previous supervisor experience preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical regulatory compliance documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from employees, customers, or regulatory agencies. Ability to write and effectively communicate utilizing e-mail. Ability to communicate effectively with all employees and facilitate problem resolutions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Individuals may need to sit or stand as needed. May require walking primarily on a level surface for periodic periods throughout the day. Reaching above shoulder heights, below the waist or lifting as required to move hardware. Proper lifting techniques required. Must be able to occasionally lift 25 lbs.

Must be willing to work on location at various locations throughout southcentral and southeast Alaska multiple times a year for upwards of 2-4 days per visit.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

For the most part, exposure is ambient room temperatures, lighting and traditional office equipment as found in a typical office environment.
