Position OverviewSince its founding in 1993, City Year Providence has relied on corporate, foundation, and individual partners to create meaningful social change. As the leader of the Development Team, and in collaboration with the Executive Director, this position is responsible for designing and executing the Development strategy that will allow City Year Providence to leverage the resources, talents, and skills of the philanthropic sector to build City Year Providence's capacity to drive impact and create change in communities across Rhode Island.
Job Description
Since its founding in 1993, City Year Providence has relied on corporate, foundation, and individual partners to create meaningful social change. As the leader of the Development Team and in collaboration with the Executive Director, this position is responsible for designing and executing the development strategy that will allow City Year Providence (CYPVD) to leverage the resources, talents, and skills of the philanthropic sector to build the organization's capacity to drive impact and create change in communities across Rhode Island.
External Relations:
Work closely with the Executive Director to plan donor engagement strategies across private, government, and education sectors (state policy, district funding). Serve as a representative of City Year Providence in the community by attending events frequently. Build meaningful and transformational relationships that result in securing both monetary and in-kind multi-year support.
Implement Growth Campaign:
Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop, plan, and implement a campaign to support City Year's continued growth throughout Providence. Add development capacities to execute against City Year's Long Term Impact goals.
Individual Giving Program Development:
Create innovative strategies to promote individual giving to City Year Providence. Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of current and future major donors. Refine City Year Giving Circles initiatives, increasing participation with individual donor gifts of $10,000+ . Work directly with the Executive Director to ensure 100% annual Advisory Board giving.
Board Management and Engagement:
Support the Executive Director in managing the Board throughout the year and during quarterly Board meetings. Maintain both financial and non-financial engagement to ensure Board retention and satisfaction.
Corporate and Foundation Management:
Establish corporate and foundation strategies and support the regional grant writer in managing relationships and communication with corporate and foundation funders. Work to increase multi-year corporate and foundation gifts.
Grant Management:
Manage the grant funding cycle for local accounts, including prospecting/profiling new funding opportunities. Work in conjunction with the regional grant writer to provide support for national and local grants.
Communications:
Develop strategies to increase brand awareness and funding. Manage media communications, including creating marketing collateral, advertising campaigns, and social media efforts. Participate in and manage community relations, including speaking engagements, fundraising events, and communication tools such as newsletters and social media platforms to engage donors and sponsors.
Manage a Team of Development Professionals:
Work with the Executive Director to develop the Development Team structure. As resources grow, hire, manage, and retain additional development staff.
Fundraising Events:
Collaborate with the Executive Director to manage special events that raise awareness of City Year Providence, fundraise, and engage individuals, foundations, and corporations as champions and donors.
City Year Culture:
Represent, respect, and model City Year's organizational culture and values internally as a member of the Senior Leadership Team and externally as a representative of the organization.
Organizational Management:
As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, contribute to organizational strategy and play a leadership role in implementing the site's local operating plan. Collaborate with other site departments and City Year's national headquarters in Boston. Maintain accurate records and donor information in Salesforce and local files. Collaborate across departments to increase giving and cultivate partnerships.
Basic Qualifications5-8 years of progressive fundraising or development experience with a proven fundraising track record, including multi-year giving (comparable experience considered).
BA/BS required; preference given to MBAs, MPPs, or other relevant advanced degrees.
Management and supervisory experience.
Strong relationship-building skills for developing and delivering fundraising and stewardship initiatives.
Solid, persuasive writing skills.
Experience working on diverse teams.
Background in navigating complex political landscapes and developing relationships with Board members and key stakeholders.
Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
Knowledge of the Providence donor community preferred.
Proficient use of Microsoft Office; knowledge of Salesforce is a plus.
Ability to adapt and excel in diverse, high-energy, entrepreneurial, and rapidly changing environments.
Proven ability to build relationships with high-net-worth donors, maintain productive stakeholder relationships, and close major gifts.
Schedule may occasionally require nights and weekends and travel outside Rhode Island 3-4 times annually.
Required Skills
