The Indoor Air Quality Educator (Educator Consultant II) will lead education and outreach efforts for the Clean Air for Healthier Communities initiative, focusing on improving indoor air quality for underserved populations, particularly those historically affected by environmental and health inequities. These groups include low-income families, descendants of African slaves, Indigenous populations, immigrants, refugees, other communities of color, and individuals at high risk due to respiratory illnesses.
The successful candidate will be passionate about advancing public health through environmental education and creating healthier lives for all people in King County. This role requires developing partnerships with community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, healthcare facilities, and environmental agencies to distribute HEPA air filters and provide educational resources. The educator will lead webinars, host outreach events, facilitate community meetings, serve as a liaison with internal partners, and oversee the development of multilingual educational materials. They will also track project performance through data collection, produce detailed reports, and recommend strategies for improving air quality outcomes. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excel in building relationships, and thrive in collaborative environments focused on improving community health.
Climate & Health Equity InitiativePublic Health – Seattle & King County (PHSKC) plays a critical role in building the capacity for King County and its communities to prepare for, mitigate, and respond to the health impacts of climate change. To focus these efforts, PHSKC launched in 2022 a cross-department, interdisciplinary, community-centered
Climate and Health Equity Initiative (CHEI).
The mission of CHEI is to support health protection, prevention, and preparedness programs that minimize the adverse health impacts associated with climate change, particularly among frontline communities.
Temporary opportunity.
Term-Limited Temporary positions are "at-will" positions but are eligible for benefits. This TLT is currently anticipated to last for
six (6) months . However, funding sources for this work remain uncertain and dependent upon decisions actively being made at both the federal and local levels. As a result, the end date of this position may be adjusted based on those decisions. The County and the Department continue to work to secure long-term funding sources.
Funding for this position is anticipated to last at least through June 30, 2025.
This vacancy can also be filled as a Special Duty opportunity. For Special Duty Assignment interest, you must be a Career Service, Career Service Exempt or other regular (non-temporary) employee in King County who has completed their initial County probation. You must have supervisor approval prior to taking a Special Duty Assignment.

KEY EXPECTATIONS AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES :
Collaborate with community-based organizations (CBOs), faith-based organizations, healthcare providers, and environmental partners to distribute HEPA air cleaners and provide training on their use.Lead public-facing webinars, community outreach events, and focus groups to increase awareness of indoor air quality challenges and solutions.Develop culturally relevant, multilingual educational materials to ensure accessibility for South King County's diverse populations.Collect data and track air quality improvements, compiling reports to assess the impact of HEPA air cleaners on health outcomes.Manage project budgets and ensure proper allocation of resources, securing additional funding when necessary.Facilitate engagement with internal stakeholders, including King County Public Health and Environmental Services teams, to ensure alignment with broader public health initiatives.Prepare detailed progress reports on community.Required Qualifications:Experience in education, community outreach, or public health programs, particularly in working with vulnerable and marginalized populations.Proven ability to manage multi-stakeholder projects and collaborate effectively with CBOs, faith-based organizations, and healthcare providers.Demonstrated experience in planning and executing outreach events, webinars, and other community engagement activities.Strong data analysis and reporting skills, with a background in tracking public health outcomes.Desired Qualifications:Bilingual skills preferred, with the ability to communicate effectively in a second language common in South King County communities (e.g., Spanish, Somali, Vietnamese).Familiarity with air quality initiatives, environmental health, and pollution prevention strategies.Strong understanding of health disparities affecting Black, Indigenous, and immigrant communities.Experience in managing budgets and securing program funding.Forbes named King County as one of Washington State's best employers.Together, with leadership and our employees, we're changing the way government delivers service and winning national recognition as a model of excellence. Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. To support employees during this time King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support working remotely.
