Lung transplantation remains the only therapeutic option for patients with end-stage lung disease and is a dynamic field at the cutting edge of medicine.
The MGH Lung Transplant Program seeks a qualified Advanced Practice Provider (APP) (Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant) to join our large multidisciplinary program. The successful candidate will join a program dedicated to a tripartite mission of excellence in patient care, dedication to sharing knowledge, and advancement of transplant science. The position reports to the Program Medical and Surgical Directors and administratively to the Sr. Administrative Director of the Transplant Center and MCS Programs.
In accordance with the rules and regulations of Massachusetts governing Nurse Practitioner practice, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) will be responsible for ensuring continuity of care of lung transplant candidates and recipients in one or more phases of transplant and will work collaboratively across all phases of transplant with members of the multidisciplinary team.
The APP is responsible for providing comprehensive care, assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients in a variety of settings, in collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals. The APP will also be responsible for providing education to patients and their families. The APP acts as the central point of contact and maintains open lines of communication between the surgeons, physicians, other members of the team, and related clinical services.
The APP will perform in the role of Independent Licensed Provider (ILP) and be responsible to work both independently and in collaboration with other providers. This role is primarily for inpatient care (pre- and post-transplant) with potential for outpatient coverage as well.
* Assess, plan, implement and collaborate on needs and care of patients. * Pre-transplant: Assess candidacy for transplant through interpretation of a variety of clinical tests, identify and manage obstacles to transplantation, and assist potential candidates through the transplant evaluation process. * Post-transplant: Manifest a high level of expertise in clinical evaluation, diagnosis, and management of complex medical/surgical patients with actual or potential health problems related to their transplant, health maintenance of these patients, and psychosocial factors following transplant. * Triage and management of sick calls. Management of/liaison with outside facilities housing MGH lung transplant recipients. * Patient education re: complexities of pre-transplant evaluation and post-transplant care. Incorporate concepts of health maintenance, prevention, and promotion into daily practice through patient education and counseling re: medication management, infection prevention, exercise/health maintenance, and medical monitoring.

Skills and Experience
* Minimum of 2 years recent experience as an APP with demonstrated clinical competence and professional accountability, required. * Strong clinical skills (particularly in internal medicine), knowledge to enable effective interactions and communications with all members of the healthcare team. * Highly motivated, independent, and capable of performing in a complex environment; Strong sense of initiative; Ability to work independently as well as part of a team. * Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multitask, prioritize effectively, and complete tasks; Flexibility to handle deadline pressures. * Strong problem-solving skills. Ability to appropriately evaluate all aspects of a situation and to independently make appropriate and timely decisions.
Education/Degree
* Master's degree is required.
Licensure, Certifications, or Registration
* Current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. * Current DEA license (if NP)
