This position is required to maintain Commission on Cancer (CoC) accreditation for OLOLRMC. The Cancer Registrar is responsible for capturing a complete history, diagnosis, treatment, and health status for every cancer patient diagnosed and/or treated at OLOLRMC. This data provides essential information to care providers and other departments within the cancer center to improve cancer treatment and outcomes. This function also satisfies the reporting requirement as established by the Louisiana Tumor Registry (R.S. 40:1105.1 et seq.) that specifies that any health care facility or provider diagnosing or treating cancer patients shall report each case of cancer to the registry. The Oncology Registrar 3 will independently perform abstracting for all cancer types.
1. Abstracting, Coding, and Staging
a. Performs high quality concurrent/retrospective abstraction from the cancer patients medical record to include the required state and national cancer registry data elements.
b. Abstracts core information from patient medical records (including demographic characteristics, history of symptoms, diagnostic procedures, laboratory values, complete treatment information and other medical conditions) and enters essential information from the medical record to the OLOLRMC cancer registry database.
c. Accurately assigns coding and staging information including diagnoses and procedures using SEER, NAACCR, IDC-10, and ACoS STORE guidelines. Determines the appropriate sequencing of diseases, diagnoses, and treatment (including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy). Utilizes critical thinking and analytical skills to assign accurate information pertaining to primary site, histology, EOD, Summary Stage, SSDIs, and AJCC Staging.
d. Takes initiative for understanding NCCN guidelines and will contact outside facilities as necessary to ensure that complete treatment information is recorded.
e. Maintains patient confidentiality including confidentiality of sensitive hospital performance improvement information.
f. Ability to analyze and process detail-oriented information.
2. Case finding
a. Thoroughly screens data within the Admit/Discharge filter of the Case Alert System (CAS) to identify all patients diagnosed and/or treated with a reportable cancer diagnosis.
b. Effectively utilizes the Solid Tumor Rules Manual and the Hematopoietic Database and Manual to determine reportability and accurately assign the primary site code for reportable primaries.
3. Quality, Performance Improvement and Compliance
a. Participates in various quality assurance projects as requested by the CoC and LTR.
b. Participates in monthly NAACCR webinars and other education as required by LTR.
c. Maintains continuing education and ODS certification as required by the ACoS CoC for ODS.
d. Works in collaboration with CoC Program Manager to maintain compliance with CoC standards defined under Data Quality
4. Other Duties as Assigned
a. Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
b. Takes accountability for own work performance and communicates with Cancer Registry Manager when procedures change and make adjustments as necessary.
Experience
A minimum of 3 years abstracting experience.
Education
Bachelors degree required in healthcare related field.
Certified Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) may substitute for Bachelors degree.
Training
Extensive knowledge of medical terminology, abstracting and coding principles, Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program, Louisiana Tumor Registry (LTR), and CoC guidelines is essential.
Special Skills
Thorough understanding of coding and staging guidelines, CoC standards, and LTR requirements.
Licensure
