Reporting to the Chief of Diagnostic Imaging for administrative issues, the Executive Director of Advanced Practitioners for Clinical issues and the Executive Director of Diagnostic Imaging for administrative support, the Nurse Practitioner will work with the Interventional Radiology physicians and particularly with the Interventional Team to facilitate the assessment, evaluation, preparation, procedures, and follow-up of interventional radiology patients.Minimum Work Experience

Required additional knowledge and Abilities

Must possess current NP license and ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification required. License, certification, and classes will be monitored through the Medical Staff Services Department. Knowledge and competence of basic radiation safety during fluoroscopic procedures; required to attend at least one (1) radiation safety training session per year. Must have broad knowledge of medical environment, surgical practices and performance goals of Interventional Radiology services. Must exercise the highest degree of professional judgement under the direction and guidance of a licensed physician. Must be able to accept instruction and guidance and assume graded responsibility in complex teamwork. Must be able to administer such care and treatment and exercise such independent originality in solving problems not covered by existing guidelines within legal limits, to meet the needs of the patients. Must maintain a professional attitude toward patients at all times and an excellent and collegial working relationship with other personnel involved in patient care.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Facilitate the assessment and work-up of Interventional Radiology (IR) patients in any environment including, but not limited to: ED, IR, inpatient floors, ambulatory clinic: The Staff Nurse Practitioner will be responsible for obtaining and coordinating the following general items: history and physical, laboratory results, charting of clinical findings, admission orders, nursing instructions, pre-procedure orders, clinical documentation required by various registries and other required elements. In collaboration with the IR RN coordinator, the IR scheduling coordinator, and Hospitalist Service, will coordinate admissions and transfers to the hospital, and ensure that informed consent for procedures is obtained at the appropriate time. Perform pre-procedure assessments in the Imaging Recovery Room/Holding Area, Emergency Department, Inpatient Floors, or outpatient setting as needed.

Medical Treatment and Post-procedure Care:

Procedure Responsibilities: Demonstrate knowledge and proper use of all required equipment and supplies used during diagnostic and interventional procedures performed in the IR Laboratory and other clinical areas.

b. Maintains knowledge and competence regarding radiation safety and use of fluoroscopy during interventional procedures.

c. Demonstrates ability to gain and secure vascular access including ability to properly access femoral artery and vein; proper sheath placement.

Post-Procedure Care:

Education and Professional Development: Attends internal and external education meetings and read appropriate professional journals in order to maintain and enhance skills and clinical competence. Completes 100 hours of continuing medical education necessary during each 2-year period of employment. Attends all IR Staff Meetings and Interventional Physician meetings (scheduled and ad-hoc). Analyzes causes of problems, identifies and evaluates alternative solutions, and selects appropriate solution, and communications appropriately and effectively utilizing chain of command. Provides teaching to students, house staff, nurses, and technologists as instructed by the attending physician, particularly with regard to the evaluation, interventional treatment and longitudinal care of IR patients. Demonstrates conflict resolution amongst colleagues. Assumes an active role in keeping informed about changes in hospital policy, procedure, and equipment.

7. SAFETY/QUALITY - Fosters a "Culture of Safety" through personal ownership and commitment to a safe environment.

a. Verifies patient identification with two patient identifiers prior to the start of any invasive procedure, including "time-out", administration of care, medications, labeled specimens and documents confirming the correct patient, procedure, site, equipment, and consent.

b. Complies with the current CDC hand hygiene guidelines through proper handwashing. Adheres to universal precautions, makes appropriate use of personal protective equipment at all times and appropriately disposes of hazardous materials. Maintains awareness of MSDS sheets and how to access.

c. Ensures environment meets regulatory requirements at all times (i.e. no cardboard boxes on floor, equipment cords are secured and plugged into foot of bed).

d. Understands and is able to demonstrate individual roles and responsibilities in the event of hospital codes/emergency preparedness.

e. Practices patient hand-off utilizing the principles of SBAR, including walk rounds.

f. Demonstrates compliance with and participates in quality indicators/standards on the unit and hospital wide (hand hygiene, Press Ganey, nursing indicators).

g. Adheres to guidelines for disposal of waste (biohazardous, pharmaceutical, and PHI).

7. Maintains a knowledge of culturally competent care to improve health outcomes for diverse patient populations.

8. Rounds on patients on the floor or in the unit as needed.
